Just had a discussion with a Trump supporter who believes that tariffs are paid by the exporter. "Mexico is paying for the wall through tariffs" is the approximate quote. We went a few rounds back and fourth and finally an ardent Trump supporter who apparently had enough with yesterday's emergency declaration came to our discussion and told the yahoo I was chatting with, "Tariffs are paid by the importer. I too voted for him [Trump] but your dismissal of facts that do not support our agenda has gotten to the point where we have to start questioning the validity of the agenda itself."

As you may imagine, it didn't quell the yahoo one bit who simply fell back to the "If nations didn't make money with tariffs, why do they have them?" bromide. I pointed out that the money is incidental to the protection a tariff gives to an industry and that is why you hear about tariffs on selected products. Still didn't register.

Your post is correct. The uneducated base of the Republicans are almost criminally complicit at this point.
