Sounds outlandish, doesn't it?

"A right to a job may sound outlandish, but it’s common sense. You need dollars to eat, and unless you steal the dollars, you generally have to earn them.

"If the government wants to protect property with cops, courts, and prisons, issue a single, common currency, and tax and fine us in it, it should at least guarantee we can work for our own dollars.

"Politicians ramble about equality of opportunity and the dignity of work, but to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, we need boots.

"And lest our boots stomp each other’s necks in senseless competition for too few jobs, we need a job guarantee.

"A job guarantee isn’t that radical.

"Thomas Paine proposed one in 1791.

"In 1944, FDR included the right to a living wage job in his Second Bill of Rights and his Republican opponent promised state-ensured employment.

"The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrined the right to work and philosophers Rawls and Dewey advocated government provide enough work.

"LBJ deliberated a JG and Martin Luther King Jr., demanded one."

Since US Capitalism prefers extracting wealth as opposed to producing wealth leading to a situation where median household income today, adjusted for inflation, is lower than it was in 1989, it becomes clear that US capitalism no longer delivers the goods for a majority of its citizens.

The democratic solution calls for government to provide what the private sector is no longer capable of providing.

When the Russia became the Soviet Union the first thing they did was create guaranteed jobs. There were people who had jobs to ride the bus. Of course many Russians felt they were guaranteed subsistence living without working. That's when Lenin created the forced labor camps.

It would be very easy for the government to guarantee a job. They could have round ups at the local unemployment office and ship the job seekers to the fields to pick and plant. That's a job. Mucking out the lines at the waste treatment plant is a job.

It would be very easy for the government to guarantee jobs if the government also had the power to move people wherever they can find a job for them.

When did Lenin dissolve Worker Soviets and usurp their power for the state?

Bad ideas keep coming around again. Like the last time they failed is forgotten and lost in a sea of dreams.

This adoration for the federal bureaucracy is a constant source of fascination for me.

Like a wife stuck in an abusive relationship, they continually forgive and provide excuses for the lying and cheating and myriad abuses perpetrated by the subject of their love, unwilling or unable to see or understand the abuse they are suffering. People outside the relationship see the abuses clearly, they try to reason with the victim, but are ultimately shunned. All they can do is watch helplessly and hope for the best.

Sad to see, and it's only becoming more widespread.

"In 1977, the Senate proposed legislation guaranteeing employment, allowing residents to sue the US government should it fail to provide it. The litigation provision was cut, but the final Humphrey-Hawkins Act authorizes Uncle Sam to 'create a reservoir of public employment.'

"According to legal scholar Cass Sunstein, in 1990, an overwhelming 86 percent of respondents expressing an opinion wanted that reservoir. This January, the JG still polled high at 47 percent—even higher among people of color—despite its relative unfamiliarity."

Was the WPA a bad idea?

"The Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects,[1] including the construction of public buildings and roads. In a much smaller but more famous project, the Federal Project Number One, the WPA employed musicians, artists, writers, actors and directors in large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects."

When did Lenin dissolve Worker Soviets and usurp their power for the state?

Lenin demonstrated a chilling disregard for the sufferings of his fellow countrymen and mercilessly crushed any opposition.

The Bigger Story

Leninjustified his violent seizure of power from the Provisional Government as merely a transfer of authority to the soviets, the popular councils elected by workers and soldiers that sprang up everywhere after the fall of the tsar. Lenin declared the formation of a Soviet government, withdrew Russia from World War I, and invited the peasants to take charge of the land that had formerly belonged to the nobles, state, and church. At the same time, Lenin's government quickly moved to shut down opposition political parties and to censor the press, introduced conscription for the Red Army, and requisitioned grain from the peasants in order to fight the bloody Russian Civil War of 1918–1920. In January 1918, Lenin closed down the Constituent Assembly after the Bolsheviks won only 24 percent of the popular vote. In 1918, Lenin renamed the Bolshevik Party as the Communist Party.

Although Lenin was ruthless, he was also pragmatic. When his efforts to transform the Russian economy to a socialist model stalled, he introduced the New Economic Policy, where a measure of private enterprise was again permitted, a policy that continued for several years after his death. In 1918, Lenin narrowly survived an assassination attempt, but was severely wounded. When Lenin was badly injured in a failed assassination attempt on August 30, 1918, his government quickly responded with the September 5, 1918, announcement of a policy of Red Terror that would take the form of arrests, imprisonments, and murders, triggering a civil war. Historian Richard Pipes has estimated that the Russian Civil War claimed two million combat deaths, two million deaths from epidemics, and five million deaths from famine. Another two million or more, mostly drawn from the bettereducated classes, fled in the face of the violence. Their departure drained the country of its already small pool of experienced leaders, managers, and entrepreneurs. The final death toll of the Russian Civil War exceeded the eight million deaths of World War I.

All working-class protesters who demanded greater democracy, such as the Kronstadt mutineers in 1921, were brutally suppressed. The same fate awaited dissident factions within the Bolshevik Party, which were banned at the Tenth Party Congress of 1921. Before Lenin's death in 1924, the Soviet Union's first labor camps were set up on the remote Solovetsky Islands, and by the following year the population of these camps reached 6,000 prisoners. Under Stalin, these camps would evolve into the notorious Gulag, through which more than 20 million forced laborers would pass. During Lenin's rule compulsory collective farms never became policy, but he created the system of repression that, under Stalin, would lead not only to collectivization but also the extermination of kulaks (wealthy landholders).

In times of crisis, only a legitimate public/private partnership is capable of making the necessary changes in time to prevent defeat:

"The War Production Board (WPB) was an agency of the United States government that supervised war production during World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established it on January 16, 1942, with Executive Order 9024. The WPB replaced the Supply Priorities and Allocation Board and the Office of Production Management."

The United Sates is the greatest society in history. The Soviet Union collapsed ignominiously.

So, Barak Obama and his Marxists acolytes want to repeat the Soviet experiment.

Why?

Pathological jealousy seems the only plausible answer. And they instrument is utter and complete Control of our lives...just like in the failed Soviet Union.

What similarities do you find between the current political economy of the US and that of 1917 Russia?

No one is advocating for complete control of your life.
If you're happy as a pawn of rent seekers, feel free to suffer for as long as you can manage.
If you're among the majority of Americans who've noticed how Finance Capitalism's ability to provide quality jobs is sadly lacking, public jobs could help you find your bootstraps:

"America has achieved the distinction of becoming the country with the highest level of income inequality among the advanced countries.

"While there is no single number that can depict all aspects of society’s inequality, matters have become worse in every dimension: more money goes to the top (more than a fifth of all income goes to the top 1%), more people are in poverty at the bottom, and the middle class—long the core strength of our society—has seen its income stagnate.

"Median household income, adjusted for inflation, today is lower than it was in 1989, a quarter century ago.[1]

"An economy in which most citizens see no progress, year after year, is an economy that is failing to perform in the way it should. Indeed, there is a vicious circle: our high inequality is one of the major contributing factors to our weak economy and our low growth."

Joseph Stiglitz | Why Inequality Matters and What Can Be Done About It

Wrong, again.
You are!

Well, we could take every unemployed US citizen and give them jobs.
Pay half of them to dig holes and pay the other half to fill the holes. 100% employment achieved.
Unfortunately, digging useless holes, then filling said useless holes contributes nothing to society even though it provides 100% employment.

This Government owes ME and the people NOTHING but Respect, Dignity and LIBERTY. Period.:eusa_hand:

Takes this shit to the EU you fucking clown.
Ready for that bad news? This government confers respect, dignity, and liberty on the 1% of voters who fund its politicians' election campaigns and retirements. Maybe you'll find what you're looking for in Poland or Ukraine?

"America’s workers would not be subjected to low wage jobs if they were assured of employment at non-poverty wages. Maintenance of full employment with available jobs offering livable wages would accomplish that goal. To get from here to there would require the United States to comply with the terms of an existing law, the Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act of 1978."
