151 years ago today: Democrats founded and staffed the Ku Klux Klan

On Dec. 24, 1865, Democrats in the American South formed the Ku Klux Klan as a means of keeing uppity blacks in their place. They attacked the blacks, and any white Republicans who defended or support them, lynching and killing them when possible. Democrat support for, and membership in, the KKK continues to this day, with theDemocrat attacking, insulting, and pillorying blacks who dared to espouse viewpoints the Democrats disagree with.

In Pulaski, Tennessee, a group of Confederate veterans convenes to form a secret society that they christen the “Ku Klux Klan.” The KKK rapidly grew from a secret social fraternity to a paramilitary force bent on reversing the federal government’s progressive Reconstruction Era-activities in the South, especially policies that elevated the rights of the local African American population.

The name of the Ku Klux Klan was derived from the Greek word kyklos, meaning “circle,” and the Scottish-Gaelic word “clan,” which was probably chosen for the sake of alliteration. Under a platform of philosophized white racial superiority, the group employed violence as a means of pushing back Reconstruction and its enfranchisement of African Americans. Former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was the KKK’s first grand wizard; in 1869, he unsuccessfully tried to disband it after he grew critical of the Klan’s excessive violence.

Most prominent in counties where the races were relatively balanced, the KKK engaged in terrorist raids against African Americans and white Republicans at night, employing intimidation, destruction of property, assault, and murder to achieve its aims and influence upcoming elections. In a few Southern states, Republicans organized militia units to break up the Klan. In 1871, the Ku Klux Act passed Congress, authorizing President Ulysses S. Grant to use military force to suppress the KKK. The Ku Klux Act resulted in nine South Carolina counties being placed under martial law and thousands of arrests.
All of this because a big bad Republican wanted to end slavery...

Lincoln didn't "want" to end slavery, and the Emancipation Proclamation did not.

.
They still keep the blacks down with drugs and gangs and random violence.

Instead of intimidating blacks, they have seduced some of them into forfeiting their God of Abraham, and have taken the God Marx in His place.

All of them will suffer for that decision as people are too stupid and lazy to draw distinctions based on character instead of race.

The KKK was started by former soldiers of the Confederacy,

which is the single most important reason you see so many conservatives so vigorously defend the display of the Confederate Flag.
The Confederate veterans were sanctioned by law and protected and HONORED as AMERICAN veterans now, something your commie ass would never understand.

Your grasp of history is pitiful, like Hiroshima wasn't necessary and then a couple a weeks later WWII ended, it isn't a coincidence either happened....Jees, are you thick.

The Confederate Flag is a symbol of State Rights, which has little to do with Slavery. It honors all of those who fought for their state rights, and apparently offends all of those who don't understand what the Civil War was about. Lots of good reasons to love the Confederate Flag.
The Confederate flag is a symbol of the TRAITORS who made WAR against the United States of America, its People and the Constitution! Your revision of history has no rational truth or validity in the real world!
It's a symbol of the Democratic Party, then. I'll agree.
Another of the historically challenged heard from!
Yes, we have heard from you, but you're a member here, so what can we do?

Oh, I know; how about a short history lesson. Democrats led the secession movements and formed the Confederate States of America.

Kapish? Democrats were, as you say, the TRAITORS. Again, Democrats. That's Democrats, with a D.
So what you are saying using alternate phrasing is the worn grade school retort, "I know you are, but what am I?" Fucking Brilliant!

I don't know too much about the origins of the KKK, but wasn't it started by those that avoided the conflict in response to the GOP's reconstruction plan? Like those that lost out to the carpet bagger's?
Yes, it was founded just after the war ended. Union reconstruction lasted a number of years. During this time, the South was ruled by the military and elected officials many of which were uneducated blacks, carpetbaggers, and criminals. Many of the white leaders in the communities were not allowed to hold office. In some areas whites were not allowed to vote. This of course didn't sit well with white southerns and violence broke out in many places. The KKK became the law in many towns in the South. Other similar organizations arose such as the Knights of the White Camellia. In some places these organizations maintained law and order and were respected by the local community. However, they rapidly became tyrannical force in the South whose purpose was controlling and punishing blacks for misdeeds, both real and imaginary.

Declaring that the Democrats are the 'party' of the KKK is as rational as declaring that Southerners are the people of the KKK.

No it really isn't, the Plantation owners were Democrats, the people in power were Democrats before and after the Civil War for 100 years, these are the facts. Declaring that Southerns are all a part of the KKK would be like trying to deny that Democrats didn't control the South...

The KKK was founded 151 years ago by Southern white Confederate veteran men.

Who were Democrats, controlled by wealthy Democrats, you don't seem to understand the South Seceded for one reason, to protect their right to own slaves...

Some of whom might have been Democrats.

As Pogo Stick has pointed out many times, there were no Republicans in the South, only Democrats were in control...

Do you blame all white men for the KKK?

No do you?

Do you blame all Southerners for the KKK?

No do you?

Do you blame all descendants of Confederate soldiers for the KKK?

No again, but I do blame all Democrats...

I understand why Democrats are in denial of this, what's so very sad is why Blacks can't see through it...

Wrong again.....it may have been founded by confederates, but it has members in every state

Is this where you tell us of your condemnation of the display of the Confederate flag?

lol
Wow you really don't know anything do you.

Quite the contrary. You should take a break from crying about how much you hate Latinos and make some time to study history.

Actually it was started as a simple social club with no political implications at all. Shortly thereafter it was taken over by elements (already existing elements) that were set on opposing Reconstruction and in some cases even insurgents intent on continuing the war, attacking occupying soldiers etc. There were literally dozens of such groups more or less organized, and many more instances of the same kind of resistance from individuals or ad hoc posses. The old stereotype of the 20th century Southerner sitting on his porch with a shotgun watching for "Revenooers" is the descendant of it.

Technically there was no "GOP". In 1865 the Republican Party was all of eleven years old. The RP is the younger of the Duopoly Parties, so "GOP" is a misnomer in any era. That's why you never see me use it.
