I shot at a white guy trying to break into my car but other than that no issues. Probably my pitbulls deter anyone as a first line of defense.

Did sparks fly off objects when they were struck, like in the movies?

I dont recall seeing any sparks. Put some holes in his trunk though.

You really should have used a shotgun, thats kind of reckless shooting at someone on the street when one of your bullets can ricochet off and hit someone else.

I've never actually even seen either an AR or an AK but based on what I've read, heard about and seen in videos my preference is for the AK-47. For one thing it doesn't seem as delicate as the AR-15, it is far more reliable -- and I like the wood trim.

AK's are notorious for jamming. I shot a couple when I was in the military. AR15's are based off the M16A1 rifle the military uses.

Damn, I hope I never have to use that one, the screaming would be something terrible. I'm not actually sure I could do it, but I do have my dog to wake me up. he's a pretty good deterrent.

Yeah, thats a valid point. I've been thinking about changing my system. I don't really have a place for a big gun safe that somebody can't steal when nobody's home. I can get to some of the other hand to hand weapons right away, but that is kind of limited.

I keep one by my bed upstairs and one downstairs by the couch. If someone is going to get lucky they better do it when my niece is over. Thats the only time I lock them away.

You're lucky you didn't kill the guy. In every jurisdiction, the use of deadly force is only allowed when - at the time such force is used – a person reasonable believes that it is necessary to avoid death or serious bodily injury to himself or an innocent third party. If you had killed the man your only hope would have been for jury nullification. Had you been prosecuted for killing the man and had the jury followed the judge's instructions you would be doing some serious prison time. Additionally, the family members of the deceased would have sued you civilly and you would have no defense.

A personal note to everyone on USMB: Never shoot at a person unless you have a reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury. If you do, be ready to face the consequences. Shooting someone who is trying to break into you car will get you a stiff prison sentence unless you are in the car at the time.

I have a JD (Juris Doctorate) and know what I am talking about. However, if you have any doubt about what I say at least check it out. You should intuitively know that taking a man's life is as serious as it gets and if you do not have a legitimate, lawful, reason you are in deep trouble. You should at least question whether it is right to take a man's life just to protect personal property. You need to know when deadly force is allowed and when it is not. When you kill a man your personal sense of justice is immaterial. The only thing that matter is the law.

That's very accurate. The AR-15 and its M-XX derivatives are beautiful guns, but they are delicate. Back in Vietnam the M-16A1 was horrible. You'd have been better off taking the gun and beating the gooks to death than trying to shoot them. They have since been vastly improved, but when dirty, become unreliable, simply by design. The AK is never going to be as accurate as a well maintained AR platform, but it will always be more reliable. It's also quicker and easier to break down an AK to clean it. The sniper rifle versions of the AK with longer barrels, tighter tolerances, etc get pretty close on accuracy, but maintain the reliability of the AK platform.

I'd definitely prefer either the AK or AR in a gun battle with anyone with a handgun. I certainly don't want to come across as an AR hater, because I'm not. It's a beautiful gun. I just prefer the AK, not for looks, but for reliability. Also, for punching power. It's a 30 caliber weapon, the AR is a .22 cal weapon.
