Western public usually reacts extremely negatively when it is proposed to analyze Ukraine conflict by means of scientific methods.

People in the West say that everything is clear to them without any science - Russian troops have entered the territory of Ukraine and it means that Russia is to blame for everything.

However, in 2003, American troops and their allies entered Iraqi territory in violation of the UN Charter, but the Western public does not believe that therefore the US and its allies were to blame for everything. People in the West say that it is necessary to analyze the situation which was in the world at that time.

Therefore, in this topic I propose to apply a scientific approach to Ukraine conflict, because such an approach can help to find ways to resolve this conflict.

First of all, it is necessary to clarify the goals i.e. the demands of the parties to the conflict.

In February 2022, Russian President V. Putin named the following goals as the main ones of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine:
  • protection of residents of Donbass
  • demilitarization of Ukraine
  • denazification of this country
  • bringing to justice those who committed numerous bloody crimes against civilians
see the official website of the President of Russia.

However, on the same day, President Biden explained the goals of the above-mentioned Russian military operation as follows:
He (V. Putin) wants to, in fact, reestablish the former Soviet Union.
see the official website of the White House.

But since nobody is able to know phenomena which are inside other people’s minds – able to know their thoughts, wishes etc. - this statement of Mr. Biden is only an allegation.

And it is a wide-spread pattern of the so-called cognitive distortions, which is called “Mind Reading”; see the thread Patterns of distortion in American statements about Ukrainian crisis.

We can refer only to goals, intentions, etc. which have been voiced by a respective person. But V. Putin never spoke about his desire “to reestablish the former Soviet Union”.

Ukraine's goals in this conflict are better known in the West; see the official website of the President of Ukraine. Therefore, I will not repeat them.

After the goals of the parties to the conflict have been determined, it is necessary to determine the rules according to which this conflict should be resolved.

At the Summit on Peace in Ukraine the last month, the US Vice President K. Harris declared:
We will continue to work toward a just and lasting peace, based on the principles of the United Nations Charter and the will of the people of Ukraine.
see the official website of the White House.

But - as it was stated above - in 2003 the US invaded Iraq in violation of the UN Charter, and a few years earlier - also in violation of the UN Charter - they performed bombing of Yugoslavia in order to force the Yugoslav army and police to leave the Yugoslav province of Kosovo, which declared its independence in February 2008. And the US recognized this independence the very next day.

Therefore, the UN Charter can no longer serve as a basis for resolving any international conflicts.
It is necessary to discuss, develop and approve some new rules for resolving the international conflicts.

And at the present time, the goals, that Russia and Ukraine set for themselves, are fully incompatible.

For example, Russia demands the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass; see the official website of the President of Russia.

And Ukraine, in turn, demands the withdrawal of Russian troops from there; see the official website of the President of Ukraine.

Therefore, at present, any peaceful resolution of this conflict does not seem possible to me. And it is impossible precisely because of the past refusal of Western countries to comply with the rules for resolving the international conflicts.
