You know what I think? I think we're victims of our own success.
We live in the most enlightened, wealthy, & abundant nation ever to grace the earth. The typical American has never experienced true hardship. They've never experienced starvation, being enslaved, rampant disease, war on their own soil, etc. Since our country has been so blessed many of them view the slightest inconvenience or offense to be the most ominous evil they're coddled minds can imagine. And if they can't find something to be offended about, they simply make something up because they have nothing better to do with their time. As the old saying goes: "Idle hands are the devil's tools."
Western civilization is collapsing over ill-perceived and self induced grievances. There's almost nothing unifying us anymore. I'm offended, rage mob this, boycott that, silence him/her, fire them. Eventually our whole electoral system will break down - it's already showing the signs. Gridlock after gridlock, stalemate after stalemate. Finger pointing here, blame game there. Spy on this, leak that, ignore these, undermine those. Judge shopping and judicial activism. Enjoin this, strike these, appeal that. This isn't democracy anymore, it's chaos.
Morover, it's the same old story. Fascism vs Freedom. Communism vs Liberty. Socialism vs Capitalism. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
The best thing that could happen right now is an amicable "divorce". The elected leaders of the 2 major parties need to sit down and come up with a plan to split this country in half and then devise a way to move their ideological constituents to the appropriate side, and then we peaceably go our own way. We split Germany in half. We split Korea in half. There's no reason we can't do it here.
Of course this won't happen, so the infighting will continue until it inevitably spills onto the streets. This is already being demonstrated in clashes such as Antifa vs Proud Boys and it's NOT going to get any better. A 2nd civil war is on the horizon.
