A lot of this relies on promising forgiveness after 20 years of payments. (Through the course of which, most borrowers will be making incredibly low payments thanks to Income Based Repayment programs - or even nothing thanks to making too little to be required to remit payment.)

Ultimately it means most of this will probably never come to pass.

But in the meantime China Joe continues to attempt to bribe his way back into power.

Spoiler Alert: Nada. In fact, it only increases tuition costs since the Universities know they'll get paid regardless.

It is unprecedented.

That means that, politically speaking - it's new.

And, just like with his first Unconstitutional foray into this matter, "forgiveness" comes at taxpayer expense.

So no, none of us are "cheering" this.

The DoE now not only has to fix this they have to pay back all the overpayments. They are going foward going to scale back the servicer system (i.e. stop outsourcing it to private companies) and keep the records themselves since these for-profit companies had zero interest in actually discharging any loans when they could be getting a cut of any payment made.

The DOE is the problem to begin with.

Back in 2010, they are the ones who eliminated much of the smaller non-profit entities that did a (mostly) superior job servicing these loans.

They then turned around and awarded no-bid contracts to the giant corporations you so decry.

And all of this took place during the Obama era.

Now remind me, who was VP at that time?

BTW, In WA state, excess covid relief funds are being distributed by Spokane City Schools to EVERY child to make up for free breakfast and lunches that they won't receive through the summer. These funds are being distributed in the form of EBT cards regardless of income. Why are Biden and the democrat governor not taking them back and putting them back in the treasury instead of relieving parents of their responsibility to feed their own children?
