AK trolls paid at least TL 1,000 a month, daily reports

Internet trolls known as “AK trolls” due to their strong online support for the interim Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government are paid at least TL 1,000 a month to harass opposition figures on the Internet, according to the Taraf daily.
Taraf claimed on Tuesday that there are 6,000 AK trolls managed by 30 managers in a “Profanity Team.” The managers reportedly hold meetings to decide who will be targeted by the trolls. There is also a team of 250 people who are in contact with the AK Party's youth wing and communication unit, according to Taraf, adding that the trolls are paid informally, often by businesses that work with AK Party-run municipalities.
The troll team was first formed in the aftermath of the Gezi Park protests of 2013, which transformed from a demonstration to save a park in central İstanbul to a nationwide movement opposing the ruling AK Party. Social media outlets such as Twitter were instrumental during this time for demonstrators to communicate and mobilize with one another.
AK trolls have significantly increased their attacks on critics of the interim government ahead of the snap general election scheduled for Nov. 1. Targets include journalists, opposition politicians and public figures critical of the government who are active on social media.
