Your thesis is a team with ball hogs would always lose, two of Chamberlain’s teams won the championship. In fact both of those teams set an NBA record for most wins in a season. If we were discussing economic merits, the issue would be whether Americans standards of living and wealth increased since Reagan ushered in free trade, and America's military's purpose was to make sure no one fucked with our free trade. Obviously we have more debt, but setting aside Trump's suicidal spending/tax cutting trends, deficits were containable with just a bit of political will. But the Freedom caucus ended any ability to reach bipartisan compromise beginning around W's immigration debacle. And actually W lost any ability to have cred in his own party because he abandoned conservatism. And the end of consensus had nothing to do with our intl alliances.

But Trump has changed the debate. What are alliances worth now, even assuming they were of use in the latter half of the 20th century? What is the point of funding a military (with deficit dollars) capable of removing Putin from Poland, and should we care if Iran destablizes the Saudis and Wahabbism? Is there any sign that Jina does not want to be able to ship its shit across free oceans?
