Or at least about to. According to a DOT report, 56,000 bridges rate 4 or less on a scale of 1 to 9 - 9 being the best.

Chief Economist Dr. Alison Premo Black says the trucking industry alone loses about $80 billion each year due to the inefficiency of the aging and deteriorating transportation network.

I would guess this is due to having to detour to avoid the unsafe bridges.

When a bridge deteriorates, the DOT reduces it's weight limit. Every bridge you see on a major road or highway with a weight limit under 40 tons has been downgraded.
