Ann Romney: Mormon missions and U.S. military are ‘different ways of serving’

Ringing doorbells with a Book of Mormon in your hand is not the same thing as fighting in the armed forces of our country. There is no comparison whatsoever. Yes, trying to spread the Word of Christ is laudable - for those to whom such is important. But there are those for whom such is totally unimportant. How are Mormon missionaries serving those folks?

Serving in the military serves everyone in our country. I doubt that there is anyone in America who would not object to having some foreign form of government shoved down their throat. I suspect there are quite a few in America who would object to having some form of religion shoved down their throat.

That would explain why Mrs. Romney said it was DIFFERENT.

DIFFERENT.

DIFFERENT.

DIFFERENT.

Another significant distinction: Solders are paid by the government. Mormon missionaries are part of a private organization.

omg, really:lol:

How is helping people better themselves by bringing them to Christ bad for society?

When the people involved turn into pushy, judgmental, religious fanatics who then seek to impose their own religious views on others, whether or not the others want to hear about those views.

Now you're talking about the homosexual lobby.

Try to stick to the subject, gomer.

What are you smoking this afternoon?

True. Besides, the military in Afghanistan and Iraq didn't ring doorbells, they kicked the doors down, expecting to be shot at.

MUCH different than pushing a doorbell with a book in your hand.

This really isn't just about Mormon missionaries ONLY. They are the same as any other Missionary....so whatever you think of Mormon missionaries, you think the same for the rest. The link Koshergirl put on her post is about ALL Missionaries.

Unless you are only picking on Mormon missionaries because you hate Anne Romney?
Isn't that something a bigot would do?

A different way of doing the same thing - serving our country. The issue is: is pushing Mormonism the functional equivalent of serving in the armed forces? She is saying it IS as an excuse for those who punched doorbells but did not serve in the military.

You need to work on basic reading skills.

please don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

the purpose of missionary work is to convert people.

yeah. Missionary work is designed to bring people to Christ. To make bad men good, and good men better.

How is helping people better themselves by bringing them to Christ bad for society?

Actually, how does that directly benefit this country?

I served in the U.S. Navy from 1982 until 2002, so I'm pretty well aware what the military does directly for this country.

You seriously dont understand why helping people be better benefits the nation? I can't possibly believe that.

Mormons take in 7 billion a year just from the members. I'm sure they spend it wisely.

You mean, Mormons REQUIRE their followers to tithe 10 percent to the church, and the gross from that forced charity is around 7 billion a year.

give it a rest, you all have done played it out now it's just boring and making you all look plume stupid

Well, here's the link................ignore it and remain stupid if you wish....................

Mormons are required to attend a Tithing Settlement with the Bishop each year. A member is questioned in a one-on-one interview with the Bishop to ensure the member is paying a full 10%. Those members who are not paying a full 10% loose their temple recommends and are prevented from entering the Temple.

Mormons who loose their temple recommends are in serious jeopardy of loosing their Celestial blessings. A Mormon who does not pay tithing cannot enter the temple. If a member cannot get into the temple, the member cannot learn the secret handshake, secret password, secret "new name" and special “sealings”. Without these, the member will be unable to pass Joseph Smith and the angels who guard the entrance to the Celestial Kingdom.

Mormons are commanded that tithing must come first before anything else. Utah has the highest rate of bankruptcies in the United States. Mormons often are told "I cannot pay my bills until I've paid my tithing." Mormons will even pay their tithing rather than give the money to a relative who is on the verge of eviction. Mormon published magazines (Ensign, New Era) constantly stress that tithing must always be paid.

Recently, Mormon Senator Orrin Hatch passed legislation that allowed members to pay a full tithe even while they were in bankruptcy court. (See S. 4044).

Mormons are told: "if a destitute family is faced with the decision of paying their tithing or eating, they should pay their tithing." (Lynn Robbins, General Conference, April 2005).

We are trying to bring people to Christ, not make them Progressives.

Missionaries aren't there to CONVERT people. But many times people will convert on their own once they experience the love of God through the Missionaries that helped them. Nobody can be FORCED to convert to anything.....

That's not what Mohammed preached. The Quran tells Muslims to convert the infidel at the point of the sword.

Who appointed you as Thread Monitor here? I would suggest that YOU might want to take your religious zeal and your obvious lack of comprehension somewhere else, Stephanie. You are the one who is appearing more than a little biased and stupid to boot.

The purpose of missionary work is to aid people body and soul.

Strictly speaking, the real purpose of missionary work is to spread diseases and show dem backward natives the joys of white bread and flatulence.

Really, there isn't much you can say to defend missionaries. Whether they are Jehovah's Witness or the damn morms, they are knocking on your door because their way is The Right Way and they are going to save you from your way which, obviously, is The Wrong Way.

I deal with them by closing the door in their face. I don't call them dirty names even though they call me dirty names (that's the job of a missionary). I don't raise my voice and I don't slam the door.

I quietly close the door and forget about them.

That's your loss.

Interestingly enough, Mormons aren't part of that group Kaiser Twit posted about the missionary association.

Keep defending that stupidity though.

Good. Would that more religious folks felt the same.

Tell people who are escorted across hostile borders in war time by missionaries that missionaries help only their church.

Got a link for actual instances where this happened, or is this more of your "I know someone who told me about someone else who said this person did that"?

I'll look...meanwhile:

"Shelters continue to open for residents evacuating from their homes as Tropical Storm Isaac moves through the state.
As of 9 a.m., 31 shelters are open around south and central Mississippi, sheltering 2,113 evacuees.

Yeah. It's a different type of service. Just like Ann said.

How are you not understanding this?
