Another example of people not being able to wipe their own asses

okay TNHarley the way you project staff needs is based on the last years stats for that day....simple...
Um...no. Last year, on this date, we had a sunny day and a local flea market in our parking lot that had lots of people out and about who came in for a quick bite to eat.

This year, that same day ends up being stormy and cool, with heavy rains and no flea market in the parking lot.

There is no reliable formula for customer traffic on which to base staffing.

Not so fast: U.S. restaurant workers seek ban on surprise scheduling
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The text message came as Flavia Cabral walked to a McDonald's restaurant in Manhattan for her 6 p.m. shift on a May evening. It was from her manager. Business was slow and she was not needed.

Cabral said she was not too surprised. Her work hours fluctuate almost weekly, though losing an entire shift at the last minute happens only once every few months. This time the canceled shift took a $63 bite out of her average $350 gross weekly earnings from two part-time jobs.

"Every week you're guessing how much money you're going to get and how many days you're going to work," said Cabral, 53, who has been employed at McDonald's for four years. But a measure of relief is coming for Cabral and 65,000 other New York City fast-food workers whose schedules and incomes often change with little or no notice.

New York recently became the largest U.S. city to require fast-food restaurants to schedule workers at least two weeks in advance, or pay them extra for changes.

The law, which the restaurant industry vigorously opposed, also requires employers to allow 11-hour breaks between shifts, offer part-time staff additional work before hiring new employees, and pay retail workers to be "on call." It takes effect late this year.
----
While i understand the inconvenience, i also understand it is a necessity.
Why cant she just find another job?
Fast food jobs will be a thing of the past before too long. 15 bucks an hour for dropping potatoes in hot oil. Having your employer change everything because you have a bottom of the barrel job and you are enveloped in entitlement. Ugh
I know as an employer in Ohio I am required to pay someone 4hrs if they show up for an 8hr shift and I cancel them. It doesn't really affect me as I'm in manufacturing and never really schedule last minute unless I need someone to work overtime.

In the restaurant business I would imagine 2 weeks as being a nightmare. The 11 hour break would seriously tick off some of my sisters restaurant employees. The offering part time more hours before hiring is just plain dumb. Whoever wrote that part has no concept of the restaurant business. That is precisely how my sister finds new hires.

Kinda typical really, bureaucrats with no knowledge of what they are dealing with making stuff up and letting someone else deal with the headaches. .

This using the government to "level the playing field" is always Liberal bullshit.

When the corrupt politicians passes laws and regulations to "level the playing field" is almost always nothing more than pandering to greedy special interest groups that pay well in either campaign funds or voting blocks..

The far right and libertarian leaning folks always crack me up.

They want to live in the nineteenth century.

You are confused.

What we want is personal liberty and for the government to stay out of our lives.

We understand that there is a role for limited government. Defense, police, courts, state functions etc.

We understand the need for criminal laws.

We understand that are a few functions that need to be paid for by the collective, like roads. After all, there ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

What we don't like is the filthy ass government taking our money and giving it away to somebody else like in welfare, entitlements, bailouts and subsidies.

We don't like the nanny state government telling us how to run our lives.

Those concerns are reasonable.

The bat shit crazy "progressive" idea that some stupid bureaucrat, whose boss is a corrupt politician, elected by greedy special interest groups, is somehow better at determining what is better for us than ourselves is absolutely pathetic.

Liberals don't understand either the concept of personal responsibility or the concept of liberty.

Government is almost always the problem. Only an idiot would want more of it.

You have a pretty good idea ahead of time that you don't have a flea market. If you don't know that ahead of time, that's on you. The rain is immaterial.

You are giving the usual conservative hate the employee bullshit to the bone. And you act as if you are not a special interest that is not donating gobs of money or turning out voters. Full time workers have the right to know their schedules well in advance.

And we recognize that business cannot abuse workers.

To an extent. We need to make sure that people do not persecute one another for their life styles, their origins, their religions, etc.

The worker in 2012 is far better off than in 1912.

Credit is due. She does work two jobs. She is obviously unskilled. But at least she is trying.. She should just close her hand..

If she's working two jobs, how much is her hand open?

If she is scheduled to work, and calls in a few minutes before her shift, I doubt her manager is happy. If the manager cancels in the same way, it's not a big deal? That's messing with her money.
Keeping part time jobs isnt a guarantee of money, either. Thats why you want full time. Benefits, same hours etc.
Her hand is open enough to want to tell her employer what to do with his/her business. Thats pretty dern open..

So, the manager doesn't have a responsibility to respect the employees' time? Maybe she could have scheduled a shift for her other job, with a little notice.

Even full-time employees can have their schedules changed at the last minute, and not have benefits. Full-time just means 40 hours.
ahhh another simpleton that has no idea of the real world. LOL get out of your fking basement kid. See the real world.
A personal attack instead of real facts and analysis only makes you look silly.
when the truth hurts.

Those are nonsensical far right and or libertarian leaning comments, Flash and jc456 and martybegan.

Modern society requires governmental to level the playing field for the worker and his employer. We have seen the great depressions and recessions of 1893 and 1929 and 2008/9 when business has too much power. That is intolerable in a free society that is responsible for the general welfare of all its citizens.

Flash thinks modern Progressivism is socialism. Silly of him.
you believe there is a tinkerbell, right? and you own a unicorn.

It depends on how they were hired. We they promised a set number of hours pef week? Were they informed of last minute shift changes?

Why doesn't McDonalds keep so many regular employees & supplement them with fill ins that they hire knowing their hours & schedule will vary.
too funny. wow. thanks for sharing that you have no idea how a business functions.

Its a darn hard job & we love to eat out, good service is part of the enjoyment of the meal, when they made tips part of the pay it put it on the customer to tip better so wait people got better pay so we got better service. we need to get rid of millions of rules & laws and find some good workable ones that can be enforced.

I agree. Like the IRS automatic inclusion of tips. That is BS since tipping is discretionary yet a wait person is taxed on total sales assuming tips
