Could it be that there is a bird's nest blocking the air pipe for the plumbing and somehow that is preventing the proper flushing?

I know NOTHING about plumbing, so this is just an off the wall guess....

I accept all thrashing thrown at me if this is really dumb!

Good thought but I would think that if it were a clogged vent then other items that drain into the same line would be affected. Also when flushing the toilet would gurgle or blurb.
