There has been a lot of discussion recently about the word “thug” and what it means when it’s used to describe black men. While the term has been in regular use for a few decades, discussion of the coded nature of “thug” has intensified. Richard Sherman, Soledad O’Brien and others have been arguing that thug has become a replacement for ni66er when denigrating black men, while detractors eagerly research the etymology of thug to show that it couldn’t possibly be racist.

By design, this narrative not only justifies violence against black people, it also denies black people the access to protection and government services that would help end cycles of violence in the black community. Black people do not have access to police protection for fear of police brutality. Black people do not have access to jobs when fear of blackness has made them unhireable. Black people do not have access to quality education when the narrative of black violence leads teachers to view young black kids at play as violent. It is not in the best interest of white supremacy for violence in the black community to end. How else would they be able to justify oppression and exploitation?

But thug isn’t the new ni66er. Thug is nothing like ni66er. Thug is much worse.
Thug is the word that says a thousand words. Thug sheds no light on the accuser, only the accused. Thug instantly condemns. Thug is a word that says “You. You deserved this. An article at Breitbart.com added a bit more information, however. According to Breitbart, the activists advocated armed revolution while chanting slogans calling for the death of police officers.



“The revolution is on," they chanted. "Off the pigs," and “Oink Oink… Bang Bang” could also be clearly heard in the video posted by Breitbart.com. Neither MyFox Houston nor the Houston Chronicle mentioned the violent chants or calls for revolution.

Breitbart's Bob Price said about 15 members of the New Black Panther Party participated in the military-style protest, although the Houston Chronicle put the number at 25. Glenn Smith, Harris County provided some 75 deputies, including 10 horse-mounted crowd-control deputies and approximately 30 crowd-control deputies equipped with riot gear.

Protesters marched in the street in front of the jail, chanting “Whose streets?… Our streets!” Breitbart posted a partial transcript detailing the chants they used.

"The revolution is on," said the leader. "Off the pigs," others said in response. The chanting continued in that vein: "Time to pick up the gun… Off the pigs. No more pigs in my community… Off the pigs. No more brothers in jail… Off the pigs. No more sisters in jail… Off the pigs. The pigs are gonna get scared… Off the pigs.
