This is a very sad thread..I do not think that the crazies have thought this through.
It is statistically probable that a lot of these kids they are protecting will be Gay. Perhaps reading these books may help them understand their sexuality better.
It may also help their classmates understand them better.
That empathy thing.
And lead to a happier and more contented society.Which is what normal folk want.
These protectors seem to be the worst kind of fascists. Dictating to everyone.
Their starting point is that Gays are bad. That is not acceptable in a modern caring society.

Parents would decide what is age appropriate not gun toting imbeciles. Kids develop at different ages and brighter kids require more challenging books than stupid kids.

So....again......the books mentioned before actually depicted children having sex with other children and adults....those books are okay with you? The public should pay for those books to be in libraries both public and in schools?

It doesn't "represent" Mark Twain, but there is no question, the N-word IS crucial to some of Twain's work, most especially Huckleberry Finn. Also Tom Sawyer. If you don't know why, I would suspect you didn't read these books, or understand them. There is a reason Mark Twain is perhaps the greatest American writer, and by a long way.

Censors always, always take the best and most important part of any book right out; I learned that decades ago. I never read abridged books, and sometimes I get quite an education just FINDING an unabridged classic, which has been published bowdlerized so often and so long that few people even realize it's not all there. Robinson Crusoe is the most dramatic example I know; he shipwrecked after being sent from Brazil by a consortium of plantation owners to find slaves and bring them back. The government of Brazil had a monopoly on slaves and it made them too expensive. Who knows that? Hardly anyone, now. Only the middle part of that story is now published. But that whole first segment turns out to be fascinating and important -- and, like Huck Finn, surprisingly sympathetic. No, never read a copy of Huck Finn that leaves out the N-word, I'd say!!
