One of the great ironies is how artists, writers, poets, creative folks...and intellectuals, tend to be supporters, of the Left: They exhibit a talent centered on individuality...yet toil, provide propaganda, for the collective.
.... their rewards when the communists take over are not what they might expect.
There are lessons from the past that seem not to sink in, thus the saying about Liberals...'feeling passes for knowing.'
But, credit where credit is due: the use of the arts in order to persuade the electiorate, rather than pointing to the efficacy of their policies, is just one more example of how the Left is light years ahead in manipulation the populace.
1. "The term “propaganda” apparently first came into common use in Europe as a result of the missionary activities of the Catholic church. In 1622 Pope Gregory XV created in Rome the 'Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.' This was a commission of cardinals charged with spreading the faith and regulating church affairs in heathen lands. A College of Propaganda was set up under Pope Urban VIII to train priests for the missions.
In its origins “propaganda” is an ancient and honorable word. Religious activities which were associated with propaganda commanded the respectful attention of mankind. It was in later times that the word came to have a selfish, dishonest, or subversive association.

2. Propaganda is the means by which charismatic leadership, circumventing intermediary social and political institutions like parliaments, parties, and interest groups, gains direct hold upon the masses.
a. “The most damning blow that the dictatorships have struck at democracy has been the compliment that they have paid us by taking over (and perfecting) our most prized devices of persuasion and our underlying contempt for the credulity of the masses.” Max Lerner “The Pattern of Fascism,” Yale Review, vol.14, p. 310.
3. Explicit state propaganda rarely exists in the classical liberal-democracies because constitutions prohibit the executive from controlling public opinions. But…in times of crisis, the legislative branch may grant such powers to the executive. In the US, we saw this for the first time, on a broad front, during WWI. Under Woodrow Wilson, the US was first nation to have a propaganda arm.
During WW I, under the Progressive Woodrow Wilson, American was a fascist nation.
a. Had the world’s first modern propaganda ministry
b. Leading artists and writers dedicated their work to proselytizing for the government.
c. George Creel was named to head the Committee on Public Information, the CPI.
