Atty In Sen. Reid Campaign Scandal Suspended For 4 Years - Law360
Law360, New York (March 23, 2015, 1:50 PM ET) -- An attorney serving two years in prison for allegedly making more than $130,000 in illegal campaign contributions to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s 2010 re-election campaign was hit with a four-year suspension by the Nevada Supreme Court on Friday, a vastly steeper punishment than was recommended by a state disciplinary panel.
In an en banc order, the state high court said a temporary suspension exacted when Nevada lobbyist Harvey Whittemore was convicted in 2013 of making excessive campaign contributions and making contributions in others’ names should be extended four years, not the 18 months recommended by a Northern Nevada Disciplinary Board hearing panel.
“While we conclude that clear and convincing evidence supports the panel's findings of misconduct, we do not agree that the panel's recommended discipline is commensurate with the criminal conduct that Whittemore was convicted of engaging in,” the decision said.
The four-year suspension will be retroactive to Whittemore’s November 2013 temporary suspension and the attorney will have to petition in order to reinstate his law license at the end of that term.
Did Reid return the money?
