Story of cities #5: Benin City, the mighty medieval capital now lost without trace

"With its mathematical layout and earthworks longer than the Great Wall of China, Benin City was one of the best planned cities in the world when London was a place of ‘thievery and murder’. So why is nothing left?"

Amazing that this great city is now entirely gone and all but forgotten. This is why the study of history is so important.

It is also important not to destroy artifacts, statues and books. Many of us wish that the Great Library of Alexandria had never succumbed to fire. Imagine the wealth of information from all over the world? Centuries worth of Jewish, Arab, Greek works of science just mentioning the ones we can assume with some certainty.

Unfortunately it has been the practice of conquerors down the ages to remove every trace of the conquered.

And imagine all that we have never known and never will. Imagine all that has been lost entirely.

Sometimes a people destroy every trace of (parts of) their own history.

I think there are sages who possess the Knowledge. Yes, it is lost for us for the time being.
