With the "carbon credit" system it has become too expensive to burn coal for electricity....without it the electric generation corporations could afford the scrubbers necessary to burn coal cleanly and more cheaply than any other "clean green energy" ever thought about.
Nuclear power can be cheap...but the brown sites it creates are a HUGE negative. Uranium 238 with a bit of 239 mixed in it on selenium rods is some of the most expensive metal on the planet.
We can fix the issues with coal...but it requires some desire to do so. Even the massive piles of yellow coal unfit to burn can be turned into cheap fuel...again it just requires desire.
Coal contains mercury...and it harms the environment in lakes, rivers and streams when burned out of the coal. Scrubbers solve this problem.
