It's really quite simple. The daily show's format is a satire with little commentary. Maher's show is not satire. It is real political commentary with a panel of guests. Yes, he's a comedian with an opening routine, but that is hardly the meat of the show.

So essentially one comedian uses comedy only part of the show.

And you think this makes them completely different?

Obviously you have never watched his show. His opening monologue lasts 3 minutes at the most. From there he does a serious one on one interview for about 5 minutes and then has a serious political discussion for the rest of the one hour show with a panel of guests that includes both conservatives and liberals.

There that Maher says that I any more outlandish or made up than fox news or MSNBC. In fact, every morning I pick this country apart harshly, much more harshly than he would dream of, at my breakfast table. I consider that a form of being patriotic, much more patriotic than fox news will ever be.
