A federal judge ordered former Theranos Inc Chief Executive Elizabeth Holmes to be examined by U.S. government experts, after lawyers defending her against criminal fraud charges said they may offer evidence she suffered from a mental disease or defect.

Holmes’ lawyers said they intended to introduce expert evidence from a clinical psychologist “relating to a mental disease or defect or any other mental condition of the defendant bearing on the issue of guilt.”

The defense expert, Mindy Mechanic, is a California State University at Fullerton professor specializing in psychosocial consequences of violence, trauma and victimization, including violence against women, and often testifies in cases involving interpersonal violence, according to her university biography.

Evidently the reason she created the company and proceeded to bilk investors, doctors and patients by falsely claiming Theranos could revolutionize medical lab testing with technology that could enable a wide array of tests with a few drops of blood out of BILLIONS after dropping out of Stanford is because she suffered some traumatic event that caused a mental 'disease' or 'defect, which led her to perpetrating these crimes.'

Poor thing.

I believe the 'traumatic psychological event' was when she dropped out of Stanford and face a future in which she had no college education and would have to actually work hard for anything she wanted. The 'disease' 'mental defect' is called 'laziness' with accompanying 'greed'. Her own personal remedy for her 'malady' was to defraud doctors, patients, and investors to the rune of approx. $9 BILLION dollars.

She sought to resolve her problem by taking the 'easy way out' (no pun intended).

Now she is in jail, and her solution is once again 'take the easy way out' - claim mental illness.

Either way, if she is found guilty or her claim of mental illness succeeds, every dime of the $9 million should be seized, leaving her with next to nothing as she was when she dropped out of Stanford, to pay back all of the doctors, patients, and investors she swindled...IMHO.

Well, if that defense stands up, corruption and corporate theft will be like the Wild West

If any CEO deserves hard time in prison it is that manipulative bitch Elizabeth Holmes. She'll never spend a day in jail.

Either way, if she is found guilty or her claim of mental illness succeeds, every dime of the $9 million (you meant billion) should be seized,

The company was valued, at its peak, at about $9 billion.
That's not how much they raised. They raised, probably, a bit less than $1 billion.
Most of which is spent, gone, already seized.

Well, if that defense stands up, corruption and corporate theft will be like the Wild West

It will be amazing to see afterwards the number of corporate / rich criminals attempting to claim fraud and other crimes on mental illness.

Perhaps Democrats will attempt to use this in their war against Capitalism and their desire to convert to Socialism, claiming Capitalism leads to mental disease and mental disorders...
