Report: Black community still suffering from ‘disproportionately high unemployment rates’

A congressional report finds that the economic recovery hasn’t solved problems faced by the black community, including “disproportionately high unemployment rates.”

Blacks account for 12 percent of the labor force, according to the U.S. Joint Economic Committee, but suffered from a 13.8 percent jobless rate in January 2013 and make up 25 percent of workers who have been unemployed for longer than 99 weeks.

Furthermore, the number of black workers looking for work has fallen by almost 300,000 since 2011, and there are nearly 2.6 million black workers who want to work but can’t find a job.

The report also points out that black workers are typically unemployed for about six months, while the typical unemployment spell for all workers is only four months.

“This disparity must be remedied,’ said Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. Bob Casey in a statement. “Congress has an obligation to ensure that the economic recovery boosts employment prospects for all Americans.”

Casey also notes that the drop in employment for African-Americans was lower for those with college degrees –only 5.1 percent of black people with bachelor’s degrees were unemployed.

“The drop in the unemployment rate to 5.1 percent for African American workers with a bachelor’s degree underscores the crucial role that education plays in creating opportunity and makes clear the immediate need to improve access to higher education,” said Casey.

However, black workers are still more likely to be unemployed than the general population across all levels of education. Last month, the unemployment rate for black workers without a high school diploma was 25.6 percent, while the overall unemployment rate for those lacking a high school diploma was only 13.9 percent.

Black, Female Unemployment Higher Than When Obama Took Office
February 11, 2013 – Unemployment for both women and African-Americans is higher today than it was when President Barack Obama first took office in 2009, according to federal government data.
Despite an economy that has technically been in recovery since June of 2009, many economic indicators are the same or worse than when President Obama gave his first address to a Joint Session of Congress in February 2009. “We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before,” Obama said in that speech. However, employment for African-Americans and women has not recovered and, in fact, is worse today than it was when Obama said those words.

At the end of January 2009, 12.7 percent of African-Americans were unemployed. Four years later, January 2013, the situation was worse, with unemployment higher at 13.8 percent. Further, an additional 1.2 million African-Americans had left the workforce entirely during the same time period, with the number of those reported as not in the workforce rising from 10.3 million in January 2009 to 11.5 million in January 2013. People not in the labor force are those who are younger than the retirement age who are unemployed and no longer looking for work, indicating they have either given up looking for work or gone into early retirement.

For women, the story is not much better. In January 2009, 6.9 percent of women in America were unemployed. By January 2013, 7.8 percent of women were unemployed. Similarly, the number of women who had left the workforce and given up hope of finding a job grew in the four years since President Obama promised to rebuild and recover. In January 2009, 4.9 million women were not counted in the labor force – by 2013, that figure had risen to 5.4 million.

Food Stamp Rolls in America Now Surpass the Population of Spain
February 11, 2013 – Since taking office in 2009, food stamp rolls under President Barack Obama have risen to more than 47 million people in America, exceeding the population of Spain.
“Now is the time to act boldly and wisely – to not only revive this economy, but to build a new foundation for lasting prosperity,” said Obama during his first joint session address to Congress on Feb. 24, 2009. Since then, the number of participants enrolled in food stamps, known as the Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP), has risen substantially.

When Obama entered office in January 2009 there were 31,939,110 Americans receiving food stamps. As of November 2012—the most recent data available—there were 47,692,896 Americans enrolled, an increase of 49.3 percent.
According to the 2011 census, Spain had a population of 46,815,916.

Furthermore, between January 2009 and November 2012 the food stamp program added approximately an average 11,269 recipients per day. President Obama will deliver his fourth State of the Union address Tuesday evening. Obama is expected to focus on jobs and the economy.

What "economic recovery" is Michael Bastasch referring to?

The Reagan recovery of the 1980s?

The Clinton dot com bubble of the 1990s?

The Bush housing bubble of the 2000s?

Obama hasn't presided over anything resembling an "economic recovery", unless you consider plunging the United States into an irreversible death spiral of debt, an "economic recovery".

Recalculate comparative unemployment rates based on education and you might get a different answer.

Posts like this are inherently dishonest, as it purports that at a given point blacks weren't suffering from lower unemployment than whites.

Bill-O Da Klown has been trotting out these sentiments on a daily basis, saying things like "but Obama hasn't been good for black employment, so he can't be going on the right direction." And he says it particularly when speaking to black guests.

Blacks have ALWAYS had at least twice the amount of unemployment as whites. Obama hasn't made it worse, it' simply remains the same.

Tough to get a job when you're illiterate . But obozo will blame it on wacism from those dastardly whites.

So you say but i bet that wasn't the case prior to 1970 before affirmative action and the super-welfare state came along. Liberalism has destroyed the dignity and work ethic of american blacks.

60 years ago america had a genuine black middle class unlike the phony one now due to quotas and affirmative action and govt hiring.
