Blind girl, seven, banned from using white stick at school as it is 'health and safety risk'

nov 17 2015 A blind girl has been banned from bringing her white walking stick to school because of "health and safety" reasons.
Lily-Grace Hooper, seven, suffered a stroke when she was just four days old, leaving her with virtually no sight.
But her school, Hambrook Primary School in Bristol, has told the youngster she can no longer use her cane because it could trip up teachers and other pupils.
A risk assessment completed on behalf of the school said the cane caused high risk to other people and that Lily-Grace should instead have "100 per cent" adult support at all times.

Every single student should show up with a white walking stick, and their parents.

Certain disabilities like being blind usually teach children in special schools. Speech and hearing can get interpreters. Not all test books are in braille and more books are going digital. She can't see the board or teacher or other students clearly.
The girl might use a buddy system to get from class to class but at her age, she really does not belong in regular school.
If she has not been in that school for the last two years the integration for the school, student and her will be enormous.
The idea of being just of the kids, just one the students is great but some people do better in special schools or at least special classes within the school.

Kids that are on crutches or wheel chairs have a buddy system where they get out before class is dismissed and a friend walks them to their next class and helps them with books and even getting in and out of the bathroom.

My sister in law used to teach special education. Most had mental disabilities and attended regular school but not regular classes. The student has their own class room and there were three tacking assistants to help them. They did not contend with halls and crowds or running students in the halls.
Noises alone can be disruptive and confusing to blind students in a crowd.

When she is older and more skilled at interacting in crowds and with reading and taking notes and doing home work. she might be integrated but that young I don't think is the best situation.

Her cane can trip up teachers and other students? Are they blind, too?

When was the last time you stood in the hall of a primary school?

Pre-k ad K might be off to one part of the school and the students might use a rope system to walk in the halls. Other students move in chaos through the school. These are not neat little soldiers in step and in formation. most classes don't keep student in one class room and have the teachers move, but the other way around.

We never had a problem. Walked in straight lines and not a bit of chaos.

Must be a problem with modern discipline.

Most elementary students are kept in one classroom.

My kids and grandkids went to very different schools. Only the pre-k and k or specials eds had their own classrooms. All other classes move from room to room. Parent teacher nights was hoping from class to class to speak to the teachers. Pick up kids or drop them off for appointments and the halls are worse than a NY subway during rush hour. End of school the mob of student from 1st grade up was a stand to the side not near the door if you value your feet or your life.
Pre-k and K as well as special classes get out earlier and/or have their own door which the students are released from. Kids are handed directly to the parent that is registered with the school to pick the children up, nice and careful. Waiting for the older classes was down right frightening sometimes.

School administrators are once again blowing it. The more ways this blind student can demonstrate her strength and courage to overcome the better it would be for everyone.
That;s the problem. They want her to depend on the teachers/government.
We can't have this child making it on her own

Come on, people! A blind girl we're going to penalize. How about we take wheelchairs away from those who are immobile? WTF!

And what, this is the first blind kid with a walking stick in the entire history of the UK that the potential for 'tripping people' is why it's forbidden. No history of other blind kids with sticks to look at and model the real risk?

Fucking brits.

Agreed, it doesn't take much to trip up a teacher, but as for the students can't they keep a sharp eye out, they are perfectly sighted, are they not! This is utterly ridiculous. Society's motto is never take responsibility for anything ever.
