BMW Says It May Cut Investments & Jobs in South Carolina Due to Tariffs

Tariffs are taxes on trades.
Trump is obviously playing a game of "tariff chicken" here. He's betting we still have enough economic influence in the world to cause a couple of large countries to blink and start a chain reaction.

Will it work? I don't know. Now that our dicks are in the wringer, I sure hope so.

But this trajectory won't continue, even Trump knows that. We can't extrapolate out very far in this situation, because conditions are going to change.
.

Part of the problem here is that Trump makes it impossible for other world leaders to “give in” and still save face in their own countries. This will prolong and deepen the trade war.

The Fed has already lowered its GDP forecast for the current quarter, with the NY Fed showing it in the 2s again and the Atlanta Fed has dropped from over 4 to mid 3s and they were way high last quarter on their forecast.

Our trading partners are showing that they think that trade deficits/surpluses matter. And they really like having the surpluses on their side.
I'd guess they're still trying to figure this all out. I'm not sure if they understand Trump's methods, or if they realize he's playing this game. They still seem a little stunned.

The question to me is whether we still have the clout to pull this off, and I don't think anyone knows for sure.

Good. We can buy American now.

You have always been free to buy American, only a socialist would want the Govt to force people to do so.

Trade policy is not socialism.

That you have to lie about that, shows that you know you are in the wrong, on this issue.

I have not lied about anything, when trade policy involves the Govt controlling more and more of the economy then it is socialism.

I personally do not want the Govt trying to tell me what to buy, but I happen to hold my freedom a little more closely than you apparently.

The whole point of Trade Policy is to ensure that our Trade is, at least, mutually beneficial.

It has not been.

Trade Policy that does not serve the interests of our citizens, is bad trade policy.

You saying "socialism" a lot, is not an argument against that.

Ideological purity is not a good reason to ignore the interests and well being of our citizens.

Could be. I think another possibility is that Trump himself will blink and paint a different picture of his blinking. As he does.

Does Trump and his staff have the ability to see when he's pushed too far, when it's time to pull back? I'm a little doubtful, but I'm always hopeful.

No, he is a lefty who is using the rhetoric of libertarians, as emotional buzzwords, to attack a pro-American trade policy.

Despite what he explicitly states, what he is really doing it just an Appeal to Emotion, Logical Fallacy.

Of course they do. The question is whether America still has enough economic clout to dictate global trade. If we do, they'll have to blink (although they may not blink until a lot of damage has been done). If we don't, Trump will have to blink, and I don't know if he'll wait too long.

That was an odd and somewhat stupid comment.

Especially considering that all his policies are designed to increase wages.

Your claim about trade wars is unsupported.
