Congress != Progress
This is another manufactured scandal by Movement Conservativism.
It says in the wording of the statute, very clearly, that you cannot get tax exempt status if your function is primarily political. None of these political groups deserve tax exempt status.
Again, if your primary purpose is to promote the advancement of a political cause or group, you absolutely and categorically do not qualify for this tax exempt status.
Starting in late 2009 there was an explosion of activist conservative political groups. They all used the words Tea Party or freedom in the title, And they all claimed to be promoting the general welfare so that they could get the tax-exempt status. Meaning: they claimed not to have a political affiliation.
When it was revealed that they were purely political, and aligned exclusively with rightwing political goals, they should have been denied access to the tax exempt status.
Instead of being denied tax-exempt status, as was legally required, the IRS ultimately approved their tax exempt status, and now the entire country subsidizes the conservative political movement.
Why were they targeted for additional scrutiny? Given the massive influx of conservative groups that applied for this tax exempt status, The IRS required a filtering protocol in order to review all of the new groups applying for this tax-exempt status. The filtering protocol was, logically, tea party (because the left doesn't have enough of these groups save one or two that supported Obama. This is one area where the left really lags behind because corporations refuse to support them en mass. Why is this so? Because the left wants to raise taxes on corporations. Therefore the left simply doesn't have the financial ammunition to compete in this particular area of electoral manipulation)
The sad part is that the Republicans have effectively used this manufactured scandal to game the system and ensure that their political activist groups get a tax exempt status that they do not deserve.
The reason that there are no similar search tools or filtering protocols for leftwing political groups is because they are numbered in the single digits. Sadly, the left doesn't have the corporate support to form an equivalent number of these political activist groups.
Now, tragically, the IRS will have even less power to deny tax exempt status to groups who don't deserve it. The rightwing now has exactly what it wants: a battle cry for the next election. Well played, well played!

False:
There were 119 partisan non-disclosing 501c groups tracked by Open Secrets in the 2012 election cycle. 66 are conservative 53 are liberal.
