This sermon was written by Charles Spurgeon who is remembered as the "Prince of Preachers." His writings are quite beautiful, his message - The Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is good news to the sinner and saint alike. It is the very promise of God that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10

T is by the grace of God that ungodly men are preserved from instant death. The sharp axe of justice would soon fell the barren tree if the interceding voice of Jesus did not cry, "Spare him yet a little." Many sinners, when converted to God, have gratefully acknowledged that it was of the Lord's mercy that they were not consumed.

John Bunyan had three memorable escapes before his conversion, and mentions them in his "Grace Abounding" as illustrious instances of long-suffering mercy. Occasionally such deliverances are made the means of affecting the heart with tender emotions of love to God, and grief for having offended him. Should it not be so? Ought we not to account that the longsuffering of God is salvation? (2 Peter 3:15.)

An officer during a battle was struck by a nearly spent ball near his waistcoat pocket, but he remained uninjured, for a piece of silver stopped the progress of the deadly missile. The coin was marked at the words DEI GRATIA (by the grace of God).This providential circumstance deeply impressed his mind, and led him to read a tract which a godly sister had given him when leaving home. God blessed the reading of the tract, and he became, through the rich grace of God, a believer in the Lord Jesus.

Reader, are you unsaved? Have you experienced any noteworthy deliverances? Then adore and admire the free grace of God, and pray that it may lead you to repentance! Are you enquiring for the way of life? Remember the words DEI GRATIA, and never forget that by grace we are saved. Grace always pre-supposes unworthiness in its object. The province of grace ceases where merit begins: what a cheering word is this to those of you who have no worth, no merit, no goodness whatever!

Crimes are forgiven, and follies are cured by our Redeemer out of mere free favour. The word grace has the same meaning as our common term gratis: Wickliffe's prayer was, "Lord save me gratis" No works can purchase or procure salvation, but the heavenly Father giveth freely, and upbraideth not.

Grace comes to us through faith in Jesus. Whosoever believeth on Him is not condemned. O, sinner, may God give thee grace to look to Jesus and live. Look now, for to-day is the accepted time!

The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.

Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.

We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions.

Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.

They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

Save, Lord: let the king hear us when we call.
Psalm 20

If the ephesians were saved by grace and grace alone how come he baptized these saints not only once but twice: Acts 19:1-6
In fact Jesus warns the Ephesians to return to their first works Rev 2:1,2,5

Seems works are part of the gospel process despite what you or spurgeon spew.

Ephesians 2:8-10
What's the definition of works?
The only works these people new at this time was the Law of Moses. That's what he was talking about.
Salvation is after all based on obedience. Heb 5:9

It is true that through the grace of God and only through his grace can we be saved. All men who come to this earth and receive a body, without any action of their own, will be resurrected by the grace of God whether he be good or evil. This in and of itself is a salvation through Jesus Christ. But when it comes to who will enter the kingdom on heaven, on must first have faith in Jesus Christ. As Jeremiah has shown us,

Ephesians 2:8
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Grace is a gift of God that is bestowed upon all in the resurrection but when it comes to entering the kingdom of heaven, one can only obtain this grace by faith. But even if we had all faith that we could move mountains at our command, without the grace of Jesus Christ you cannot be saved into the kingdom of heaven. In other words, Jesus holds the key that unlocks the gates of heaven. Only he can grant you access to the kingdom of heaven. But does this mean that he will automatically grant it to all? No, the scriptures tell us otherwise. They tell us that we must first have faith. So what is faith? Is it simply a mere belief in God? No faith is a principle of action. It incorporates righteous deeds, ie works, within it.

James gives a great sermon on how faith is manifest by our works.

James 2:14-26
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

So faith with its accompanying works are required by the Lord before he will grant unto us his mercy to enter into his kingdom. But isn't that earning your way to heaven? Not one whit. You could have all the faith and works in the world but without Christ and his atoning sacrifice, it would avail you nothing. We would be unprofitable servants. You could not enter the kingdom with all the good works and faith without the atonement and mercy of Jesus Christ. Its just a requirement that Christ has made of us before he will grant us the mercy that is the key to our salvation. With all the works in the world we still cannot boast that we earned our way to heaven. But they are a requirement of the Christ before he will allow you in. He wants you to make an effort to be a good being and one who will be able to abide by his celestial law. He expects us to repent and forsake our sins and keep his commandments. But none of this is of any value without the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Thus we read:

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Neither the faith nor the works saves us. Nobody can boast. It is the grace of God that saves us. But the faith and works are required of Jesus before he will grant us the mercy. Thus Paul to the Ephesians goes on to say
,
Ephesians 2:10
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

We are required to do good works and walk in them. God promises us his mercy if we will do so. But they do not save us and we cannot boast of them because of their ineffectiveness and they avail us nothing. Therefore it is important that we repent and do good works. Only then will the Lord bless our lives with his mercy to allow us into his kingdom.

.
Matthew 4:17
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

HE apostle uses the perfect tense and says, "Who hath saved us." Believers in Christ Jesus are saved. They are not looked upon as persons who are in a hopeful state, and may ultimately be saved, but they are already saved. Salvation is not a blessing to be enjoyed upon the dying bed, and to be sung of in a future state above, but a matter to be obtained, received, promised, and enjoyed now.

The Christian is perfectly saved in God's purpose; God has ordained him unto salvation, and that purpose is complete. He is saved also as to the price which has been paid for him: "It is finished" was the cry of the Saviour ere He died. The believer is also perfectly saved in His covenant head, for as he fell in Adam, so he lives in Christ. This complete salvation is accompanied by a holy calling.

Those whom the Saviour saved upon the cross are in due time effectually called by the power of God the Holy Spirit unto holiness: they leave their sins; they endeavour to be like Christ; they choose holiness, not out of any compulsion, but from the stress of a new nature, which leads them to rejoice in holiness just as naturally as aforetime they delighted in sin.

God neither chose them nor called them because they were holy, but He called them that they might be holy, and holiness is the beauty produced by His workmanship in them. The excellencies which we see in a believer are as much the work of God as the atonement itself. Thus is brought out very sweetly the fulness of the grace of God.

Salvation must be of grace, because the Lord is the author of it: and what motive but grace could move Him to save the guilty? Salvation must be of grace, because the Lord works in such a manner that our righteousness is for ever excluded. Such is the believer's privilege—a present salvation; such is the evidence that he is called to it—a holy life.

One passage out of a whole bible--Its a very wise course to listen to all that Jesus taught, he didn't teach them for nothing. And he assures all--Only those living to do Gods will now, get to enter his Fathers kingdom( receive the grace) Matthew 7:21. He as well taught this--Man does not live by bread alone, but by EVERY utterance from God-- years of study of the OT-NT to accomplish that. Only the ones who accomplish all teachings will receive grace. So dont be fooled.

Again, you need to listen to Jesus--- Matthew 10:22-- Those who endure till the end( death, or Har-mageddon) will be saved( receive grace)--not while they are living, one must live now to do Gods will 24/7, 365( Matt 7:21-- Matt 16:24) and do it all the way until their end--then one is saved.

For years now, I have written on this very board (again and again) Jesus said, But he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved. And! ....Without holiness no one shall see the LORD. What do you think that means if not to stop sinning and be holy? Still, salvation is a work of grace. One cannot be saved without the Holy Spirit drawing them to Jesus Christ first. Salvation is a gift. Not a reward (for good works).

Abraham was justified by faith. Not works. The born again Believer is justified by faith, sanctification is a process. You are a Jehovah's Witness. You need to stop reading the New World Translations and buy a King James Version Holy Bible. Tyrone is a Mormon. He needs to put down the Book of Mormon and buy a King James Version Holy Bible. Read the KJV Holy Bible and ask the LORD to reveal to you the truth of His Word.

Hilarious.
Of Course Abraham was saved by faith in Jesus Christ and not by works. Because the works he's' talking about didn't exist until the mosaic law.
Paul was showing the Jews there's salvation outside the law of Moses. Especially Abraham who did not live by the "works" of the law of Moses. because it didn't exist.

Actually revelation says--at judgement one will be judged by their works. So Works plays an important role in a true followers life. As well James taught--Faith without works is dead--this means--The works one does builds up a strong living faith, without the works ones faith is worthless under pressure.
There are many errors in the KJV.

So obviously Abraham did many fine works to build his faith to stand under pressure-- That is the kind of faith it takes to be saved. Anyone can think or say-- I have faith--pressure will reveal truth to all.
Yes salvation is a gift--no matter who gets it, because all sin and fall short of the glory of God.
Works builds ones faith. Do not discount works to lightly.

Matthew 7:21
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 13:24-30
24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Matthew 13:36-43
36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.
37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And it is free for all to partake.
