A study has found rules that required Canadian aboriginals to attend state-funded church schools were responsible for "cultural genocide".

The report released on Tuesday found that First Nation children were often physically and sexually abused.

"They were stripped of their self-respect and they were stripped of their identity," said Murray Sinclair, one of the study's authors.

More than 130 residential schools operated across Canada.

The Canadian government forced more than 150,000 First Nation children to attend these schools from the 19th Century until the 1970s. The schools sought to integrate the children into mainstream Canadian society, but in doing so rid them of their native culture.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada has concluded the country’s decades-long policy of forcibly removing indigenous children from their families and placing them in state-funded residential Christian schools.

Often churches didn’t make note of the children who died in those schools. So we don’t even have a complete record of those—how many that did die. We know for sure it’s at least 6,000 to 7,000, but it could be even higher. Many churches had unmarked graves. And we’re in a situation now where many residential school survivors and First Nations are demanding that churches come forward and give us all of their documentation, at every level, no matter where the documents have been kept, about who knew what and when, who was involved, and primarily to bring closure for many of these families to know where their child last spent their days, where their remains could possibly be. And all of that information has not been forthcoming from the churches, especially at an administrative or national or international level.

Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald told the House of Commons in 1883 that residential schools would be one of the main weapons used to eliminate the “savage” before it grew to become incorrigible.

“When the school is on the reserve the child lives with its parents, who are savages, he is surrounded by savages, and though he may learn to read and write his habits and training and mode of thought are Indian,” said Macdonald, in a passage quoted by the report. “He is simply a savage that can read and write.”

The policy persisted into the 20th Century and was supported by Church leaders of all denominations running residential schools, the report said.
