The Bible consistently tells us that homosexual activity is a sin (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). Romans 1:26-27 teaches specifically that homosexuality is a result of denying and disobeying God. When people continue in sin and unbelief, God “gives them over” to even more wicked and depraved sin in order to show them the futility and hopelessness of life apart from God. 1 Corinthians 6:9 proclaims that homosexual “offenders” will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Is there anything newly revealed here? Not really. Liberals think Christian teachings are antiquated and are a pox on society. They also think God is far more understanding and yielding than what evangelicals, Catholics, or Orthodox insist upon. Yes, we have heard it before.

When Pope Francis said “who am I to judge?” his message was really quite terrific. What he meant was (my paraphrase) that he is not going to judge or condemn any man for his sins including being gay because no one on earth is given that right. That is God’s alone. We do not know where someone comes from, how they were born genetically or with what proclivities, how they were nurtured, etc. So how someone ended up as they did can be almost through no fault of their own. Only God knows.

Also, the pope is not saying in any way that homosexuality is thee great sin that cannot be forgiven or that trumps other sins like adultery or malice, etc. So he does not want to single any one or any group out as to be ostracized or not welcome. And good on the pope for that.

But that is surely not to imply that sex outside of marriage is now allowed or no longer a sin in most, if not all, cases. It is. That is what the Catholic Church has always taught --- and this will surely come as a shock to all protestants --- what the Church rules trumps whatever or however they choose to interpret Scripture. ( Jesus gave that command and authority to Peter and the Church in three different passages in the gospels.)

So do not let secularists like the New York Times reinterpret what is going on here or confuse the issues. They can try to reason why Christianity is bad or backwards with their greater wisdom and charity, and some of us will try to take them seriously and not try to roll our eyes --- because we have been through this kind of stuff a thousand times before.
