Christians attempt to silence non-religious messages at Christmas

And being insulted does not give you special victim status.

Or else we'd all be victims.

That depends on the insults.
If the "insults" consist of threatening to have a holy book declared "hate speech" thus effectively removing the book from the shelves and hands of believers, if the "insults" consist of threatening to shut down churches for daring to preach sermons, if the "insults" consist of driving Christians out of politics based upon nothing except the fact that they're Christian, then I'd say that entitles Christians victim status.

It's exactly what the Nazis did to the Jews, it's what the Muslims did to the Christians in the near east, it's the basest, most corrupt and most vile form of bigotry.

I have not heard of any reports where anyone was even attempting to do what you say. You sure you're not eggagerating just a wee bit?

1 and 2 are nothing more than empty threats and probably isolated incidents anyway.
as for 3 you can find people who want to drive out any particular faith out of office. Really if any non-christian non-jewish person tried to run for office at least part of the religious right would throw a fit and try to get rid of them.

Although I'd love to see your sources that these are all mainstream and not just a couple of goof-balls. I'd really love to see that these scenarios are actually legitimate threats.

Oh and thank you for citing Godwin's law, because this is exactly like forcing Jews to wear stars, forcing them to live in ghettos, spreading propaganda against them, using them as a scapegoat, breaking their glass, busing them away to Auschwitz, using some of them for medical testing, stealing their stuff, and just flat out executing them and dumping them into massive graves.

Are you sure you're not overdoing the victim card?

I've yet to see a single suggestion of closing a single church. Or banning the bible.

I've yet to see a single suggestion of closing a single church. Or banning the bible.

And even if people seriously wanted to ban the Bible, they'd get absolutely nowhere. It's covered under first amendment and they can whine about it all they want but they can't change that. Even violent video games are covered under the first amendment what makes you think the Bible won't be?

Also if a politician supported a bill banning the Bible imagine what that would do to their political career.

In an "action alert" distributed last week, Rushfeldt wrote that if C-415 becomes law in Canada, "the following consequences will result, especially once hate crime charges are brought before the courts":

The Bible, at least certain portions of the Bible, may be declared "hate literature."

Churches will not be able to mention certain Scriptures.

Clergy may be subjected to criminal charges if they refuse to marry homosexuals.

Parents may be subjected to criminal charges if they refuse to allow their children to attend classes that teach about and promote homosexual behavior.

Expressing disagreement with homosexual behavior or the homosexual agenda, either verbally or in writing, would be considered hate propaganda.

Educators, including those at private religious schools, will not be able to refuse to teach homosexual curriculum.

Religious institutions will not be allowed to teach anything non-supportive of homosexual sex.

Canada's House of Commons passed a controversial bill yesterday opposed by religious believers and free-speech advocates who say it will criminalize public expression against homosexual behavior.
The bill, passed 141-110, adds sexual orientation as a protected category in Canada's genocide and hate-crimes legislation, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

Hate Speech and the Bible | Political Ground Zero

Imagine you woke up one morning to discover that, in your city, singing a hymn or reciting a Bible verse in public was a criminal offense.

Michael Marcavage doesn't have to imagine it. He lives in Philadelphia — a city that has, for the sake of "gay rights," imposed one of the harshest "hate speech" regimes in North America. Peacefully opposing the advancement of sodomy can land you in prison, if you do it in Philadelphia.

Marcavage and three of his friends face felony hate crime charges that could net each forty-seven years in prison. Charges have been dropped against another six of the original "Philadelphia 11," with one juvenile in the group removed from the case.

Police arrested the eleven on October 10 (see The Chalcedon Foundation - Faith for All of Life). Marcavage led the peaceful protest against a homosexual street fair called "Outfest." On December 14, a Philadelphia judge ruled that the prosecutor could proceed with the case.

"Do I expect to go to prison?" Marcavage said. "I didn't expect to be prosecuted so aggressively, so why should I expect not to go to jail? The prosecutor calls us hateful and disgusting people; the district attorney says the Bible is hate speech, and they're out to make an example of us."

Until the criminal trial, Marcavage and his organization, Repent America, have been banned by the court from coming within 100 feet of any homosexual event in Philadelphia.

THat last bit is interesting. IF it's not hate speech to post Christian-hate signs next to nativity scenes, then why is it hate speech to protest at homosexual events?

Silencing the Liberty Bell - In Philadelphia, home of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, the Pennsylvania state "hate crime" law8 was used to justify the arrest and jailing of nearly a dozen Christians. On October 11, 2004, homosexual activists were celebrating "National Coming Out Day" at a street fair for an event called Outfest. The Christian Group Repent America walked into the gathering, singing hymns and carrying signs encouraging homosexuals to repent. They were surrounded by a self-described group called "The Pink Angels," who blocked their movement with large cut-outs of angel shapes. Police then arrested 11 Christians and none of the Pink Angels.
If convicted on all charges, the Christians could have faced a total of 47 years in prison. Despite a videotape that showed no criminal activity, the prosecution refused to withdraw the charges, and characterized the group's views in court as "hate speech."9

In February 2005, a judge finally dismissed the charges, saying that she found "no basis whatsoever for any of them."10 However, a liberal government openly hostile to Christians was able to use the "hate crimes" law to send a message of intimidation toward people who oppose the promotion of homosexuality.

No "hate" when Christians are on the receiving end - Another example of Philadelphia's double standard on hate crimes came on June 14, 2005. A militant homosexual mob threatened a group from Repent America with physical violence during Philadelphia's Gay Pride parade, a city-funded event that included simulated sex acts on some of the floats. Police ignored the mistreatment of the Christians, and the obscene displays in the parade and around it. One float at the parade featured partially dressed women bending over and being spanked with hands, whips and objects. "It is astounding that this type of illegal behavior is being permitted by city officials and despicable that the police refused to arrest those engaged in the lewd behavior, even after we pointed out the obvious to them," said Repent America founder Michael Marcavage.

During the event, the Christians were "surrounded, obstructed and continuously harassed" by homosexuals, many of whom wore handkerchief masks to hide their identities. It was later discovered that a group known as Philadelphia Anti-Racist Action had issued a news release before the parade that called on supporters to stop Repent America's planned demonstration. Homosexual supporters were told to gather near the "Queers Bash Back" and "No Human Liberation Without Queer Liberation" banners.11 This blatant attempt to suppress one group's message was not considered a "hate crime."

Everyone gets insulted on this board. It's not a Christian monopoly. As to who is being silenced, it's not Christians.

Allie Baba-- you sound paranoid and hysterical.

Bullshit. I'm not paranoid or hysterical. Listen to the loons who get all freaked out because people dare to say "Merry CHristmas" to them on the street.

Or the idiots, such as Ravi, who think that the Bible should be declared hate speech.

How long have you been here? Obviously not long enough to know what hte hell you're talking about. Do some reading before you presume to be an expert.

what the fuck does CANADIAN news have to do with the UNITED STATES?

It has to do with the direction we're going with the whole "the bible is hate speech" scenario.

All of those sources have a really clear bias to them. worldnetdaily has a bias that's incredibly obvious and I don't them reliable in the slightest.

And yeah people submit stupid laws with unintended consequences all the time. I highly doubt the Canadian law will survive if those facts are true.

Although it may do you wonders to check the dates as the Canadian story was from 2002.

the other sources were from 2003, 2004 and 2005
Here's C-415 today or at least a more recent version

C-415

and finally politiclagroundzero doesn't really report on much it's more of a rant.

Look here in the U.S. the bible would never be labeled hate speech and even if it did, it couldn't be banned and you couldn't sue people for reading ala first amendment.

Really if it got labeled hate speech it would be overturned in record time.

Listen to the loons who get all freaked out because people dare to say "Merry CHristmas" to them on the street.

Since when should you care about loons?

Again the phrase merry Christmas can't be banned and once again it would be political suicide for a politician to even suggest a ban.

Stop being so concerned about empty pointless threats.

bullshit. Canada is not covered by our first amendment like you are. In case you haven't noticed, there is no law against saying ****** either so enjoy all the gay hating speech you think is necessary to ensure you a ticket to heaven.

good job working in the gratuitous racial slur.

This federal legislation, orchestrated by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith will lead to creation of a vast anti-hate bureaucracy in America, similar to what now exists in Canada. In Canada it is a "hate crime" to publicly criticize such federally protected groups as homosexuals and Jews. In Canada free speech talk radio no longer exists. It is even illegal now in some areas to evangelize or "proselytize" in public.

HR2662, S1145, while ostensibly punishing only violent hate crimes, nevertheless creates an anti-hate bureaucracy through several means:

1. It breaks down all barriers between federal and states, rights in law enforcement. It allows federal "thought police" to meddle, upon the flimsiest of pretexts, in states, enforcement of civil rights laws.

2. It requires all states to pass and enforce ADL-style anti-hate laws.

3. It enforces nationwide the working ADL definition of "hate" as being "bias" against federally protected groups, such as homosexuals. Such automatically makes the Bible into "hate literature" and preaching from it into "hate speech." Result: Bible-believing Christians become potential hate criminals.

The nation was aghast last October 10th when the ADL'S national executive board member, Lynne Abraham, D.A. of Philadelphia, arrested 11 Christians as hate criminals. Her charge: Their preaching was "biased" against homosexuals. They were "hate criminals" because they used an "instrument of crime" (a megaphone) to express "hate speech," (Bible verses) against homosexuals.

If this "big brother legislation" becomes law, the ADL and federal government will, through enabling legislation and judicial precedents, be exponentially empowered to indict Christians. Pastors, talk show hosts, publishers, critics of Israel, etc. will be liable to arrest just like the Philadelphia Eleven.
House OKs 'Anti-Hate' Bill - Freedom Of Speech In Jeopardy

How is it that a church group that believes that marriage should be between one man and one woman, and that fidelity in marriage should be kept sacred, deserves the label "anti-gay" and is also guilty of "hate speech?" Only in the eyes of the accusers, and evidently, The Herald. The article was filled with venom. As far as I can see, the ones guilty of hateful speech and intolerance are the accusers.

HeraldNet: How can beliefs be 'hate speech'?

The problem is the government's definition of hate. It's not the same as Webster's. In its "anti-hate" educational program, the government endorses the idea that "hate equals bias against homosexuality" (homophobia).

What document is the most biased against homosexuality? The Holy Bible. Bible-believing evangelical Christians are thus the ultimate target of the twisted definition of "hate" upon which the federal hate bill is based.

If the LLEEA is passed this spring, it will begin to criminalize criticism of homosexuality. It will quickly broaden to address the grievances of homosexuals, not just concerning physical safety from violent hate crimes, but emotional safety. Through enabling legislation and judicial precedent, hate crimes will soon come to mean "hate speech", just as it does in Canada, Sweden, France, Ireland, etc.

Phony Statistics

Proponents of the federal hate bill claim there exists an "epidemic of hate" in America. It is a crisis, they contend, that cries out for massive federal legislation.

Yet, the FBI's annual "Uniform Crime Report" for 2002 shows that alleged "hate crimes constitute an infinitesimal 1/20 of 1% of all crime in America. This is hardly a crisis demanding creation of a vast federal "anti-hate" bureaucracy with unlimited power to invade state's rights in law enforcement.
