My personal opinion is that if Trump doesn't drastically alter NAFTA his promise will be used against him as empty promises come re-election time. Along with taxes and the Wall. If it is positioned as empty talk, without question, he risks losing the Rustbelt which will be very difficult to regain if you are the GOP.
I have stated before and will state it again and again, if America doesn't put into place a grievance process that allows for Whistleblowing against abuses by foreign government against American businesses in any new NAFTA agreement, than any incarnation will be drastically exploited by the Canadian police and authorities, and the America economy will be dragged further and further into deep socialism. Having read many responses by American businesses, they are aware of many of Canadian tactics that undermine their free market objectives.
One just has to read the over 12000 comments from businesses and regular folks, along with the testimony to be held on July 27th at the USTR to know just how drastically unpopular NAFTA is, much of these comments exposing and calling out Canadian government subsidies, grants, cash payments and the like to teal jobs or give Canadian businesses a leg up against American companies.
