The officer was 45, white , and a former New York police officer.

The killer is Marco Antonio Parilla Jr., 23.

After shooting the officer, the killer ran over his body as he fled the scene in his car.

TAMPA BAY, Florida - A police officer was shot and killed in Tarpon Springs, a coastal town a few miles northwest of Tampa Bay.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and the Tarpon Springs Police Department are investigating, reports CBS affiliate WTSP in Tampa.

The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. on December 21, on Grand Boulevard in Tarpon Springs. The suspect in the shooting is in custody.

A news conference will be held Sunday morning to provide further details regarding this incident.
