Let's face it... you don't need talent to be still touring. Just notoriety.
Nuge may be a wackaloon but he knows how human psychology works.
I've seen Nuge many times. His live shows rock out hard. Well for those of us who like to rock he's great.
If you don't like him fine and dandy, but there is no denying he still has a great fan base.
So did Wayne Newton.
Let's face it, and TD you know the biz as well as anyone-- the unwashed masses will go flocking to see anyone the Pavlov machine tells them to. That's why the Rolling Stones kept a career thirty years past their own relevance (to name just one comparison).
As far as actual performance (to previous post) -- there's a chasm of difference between talent and gimmicry. Making wailing noises is just electronics that anybody can buy from Musician's Friend. Putting those notes into an art form that comes from and conveys to the soul, that's an entirely different endeavor. If Nuge had an ounce of the latter he wouldn't need the sideshow of political circus.
I have little doubt that he's self-serving enough that that circus, such as the gadfly quote of the OP, is born not out of any particular political philosophy, but simply designed to keep selling those venue seats to gawkers who come to see the circus. But what he actually does with the guitar? That's a dime a dozen. The rhetorical circus is what he's known for, because that's what he's good at. P.T. Barnum's famous quote was never lost on hucksters like Ted Nugent.
