While I do confess my relative ignorance of the specifics I do recall reading about a Yellow Peril which I thought came about in the late 1800s and was prompted by an increasing presence of Chinese males who were willing to work for "coolie wages," thus dominating the field of unskilled labor and putting thousands of American citizens out of work.

While it's true that the "Yellow Peril" was exclusionary in its fundamental intent, which was preservation of available employment, it was not prompted by the kind of discriminatory ethnic hostility that underlies the contemporary issue of racism.

Simply stated, the Chinese were not excluded because of their race but rather because of their threat to unskilled citizen workers.

FYI this kind of racism goes both ways. My [ex]husband's wife was forced to leave him because he was white. A decision her parents rather quickly learned to regret as she went through a string of abusive "proper colored" husbands. They used to come over and joke that they were stealing him back...
