Sen. David Vitter is blaming Louisiana’s loss of a congressional seat on the large number of illegal immigrants he says are living in other states.
By including illegal immigrants in the new 2010 census population counts, Vitter contends the federal government is penalizing states that don’t “welcome” them.
“Louisiana stands to lose clout in Congress, while states that welcome illegal immigrants stand to unfairly benefit from artificially inflated population totals,” the Republican senator said in a statement Tuesday.
Louisiana will have six seats in the U.S. House after the new reapportionment, instead of the seven or eight it’s had throughout the past century.
“Even though we’ve been expecting this, the confirmation that Louisiana will lose a congressional seat is frustrating,” Vitter said.
Census forms do not require residents to reveal their citizenship status, said Robert Bernstein, a public affairs specialist at the Census Bureau. “We made the attempt to count everyone who was actually residing here,” he said. “We don’t ask that question about someone’s legal status.”
In 2009, though, Vitter tried unsuccessfully to force a question about citizenship status onto the census questionnaire, he said, to “prevent the counting of illegal immigrants for the purpose of apportionment.”
The more I read about the issue of illegal immigration, the more I am convinced that our Federal Government has lost its motherfucking mind. How the fuck do you justify allowing illegals to be included in the Census if that ends up giving certain states more representation in the House of Representatives? That should have been illegal from the very start. It gives our fucking Federal Government INCENTIVE to INVITE them if we play by these rules. Man, we are so fucked. The states are fucked. The people are fucked. We might as well ALL be fucked by Jose's Famous Habanero Pepper...
