I think it is a tricky time we live in. We play God everyday by extending lives far beyond what nature would have allowed. Bsbies are born with horrendous birth defects can live now for a few months or years dependent on expensive machinery and care when they would previously have died shortly after birth. People can be kept alive when they dont want to be.

When my father died, he was in a coma and essentially brain dead. We had to keep him like that for several days and finally removed him from life support

Even then it took several hours before they pronounced him dead

We treat our pets better than this and allow them a dignified death
