nd leaves out quite a bit of important information as to why hospitals overcharge. It's not just some cynical ploy between them and the insurance companies to milk people out of money. That's just a narrative geared towards people like you. The government actually is a big part of the problem.

No, idiot, it's always about profits. We live in a capitalist society and health care companies and insurers have profit margins as their primary motivation. So every price they set, every reimbursement rate they agree on, is all done within the context of maximizing profits. It's naive to think there's any other motivation.

Yes, they are insurance plans. When you buy insurance, you are buying an insurance plan. There is no such thing as a "health care plan". There are only health insurance plans.

You do realize that the hospitals have ( and negotiate) contracts for all of the different health plans right?

Yes, they do. However, the chargemaster is fixed and doesn't change depending on the insurer. The contracts insurers have with providers is to determine how much of the charge in the chargemaster the insurance company will reimburse.

And here everyone thought it was a risk pool where higher risks payed higher premiums and lower risks paid less.

Who is determining who is risky and who isn't? The insurer. And why are they doing that? To protect their profits. So they quite literally put their profit margins ahead of your health needs. This is a system you want to defend, why? And what happens if someone from the low-risk pool ends up incurring more costs in any given year than someone in the high risk pool?
