Does the USA have a problem with its prison population?

We do have a problem with our prison population. 12 % of the population makes up 40% of the US prison population. While some of the imbalance is due to ineffective legal representation, the vast majority is due to the fact that that 12% is 6 times as likely to commit a violent offense as their 72% counterpart.

Almost EXACTLY the same ratio as 12.6% of the U.S. population making up 39.8% of the nations welfare leeches. Isn't that an incredible coincidence? Hell...that's no coincidence at all. They go hand in hand.

Yet, we are one of the most prosperous nations on Earth. That means there are other countries which have a higher poverty rate than we do, but they have a lower incarceration rate.

Poverty in France has fallen by 60% over thirty years. Although it affected 15% of the population in 1970, in 2001 only 6.1% (or 3.7 million people) were below the poverty line (which, according to INSEE's criteria, is half of the median income).

Ours is about 16 percent.

France also has a lower incarceration rate. Only 103 out of 100,000.

You don't have to get all hysterical about it, but if you replaced Blacks with Japanese in the US you would see a precipitous drop in incarceration rates due to an overall lower crime rate. Sorry its just a fact.
