Defeating the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) will require a clear plan with an exit strategy as well strong commitment from the US's allies and partners in the Middle East as air power with intelligence and logistical support from Washington will not be enough to counter extremist militants in Iraq and Syria, US analysts agree.

In a strong speech on Wednesday night, President Barack Obama laid out his plan for defeating ISIL in the Middle East: "… I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are. Americans cannot defeat ISIL for the Arabs and the Muslims. The Arabs and Muslims must do it themselves -- with American support.”
