Personally, I think the reason Sessions offered a rebuttal may be to set up a thinly veiled basis for getting fired and not having the optics imply that Trump fired him to get a new AG who would squash the Mueller investigation.

That said, unless the "temperature" in the Senate has changed, firing Sessions isn't likely to get Trump an AG who will can Mueller or the investigation. Senate Intel. Cmte. members -- GOP and Dem -- aren't, generally, of the same mind about the "Russia" investigation. Despite what Fox, Trump, Nunes, and the rest of the "GOP echo chamber" may tell the "peanut gallery" of Trumpkins, Senators know better, and they know damn well that Mueller isn't, as Trump does, just pulling stuff out of his ass and trying to convince the world it doesn't stink.
