Hamtramck was never a shit hole like Detroit. Its housing stock was maintained by working class Poles, unlike Detroit. Most of the old Poles died and their children left. That opened it up to the Muslims who already had a significant presence in Dearborn, a close by suburb.

My father and I use to go to the Polish Yacht Club (bar/restaurant). It was not in Hamtracmk, but in Detroit on the border with Hamtramck. It also was not on the water...so a Polish play on words. The food was fantastic and the bar tender generous with the drink. It had an unusual feature to it's bar. The long wooden porcelain bar also functioned as a urinal. You could stand at the bar and drink...and piss at the same time.
