I think you guys misunderstand how lead poisoning through pipes works, and thus why they'll lose the case - because they are poisoning themselves through their own actions. The solution is so damn simple anyone can manage it - run your damn water before you drink it. Lead leeches into /standing/ water over time. If you flush that standing water out of the pipes, then there is basically no chance for the lead to leech into the water. See - CDC - Lead - Tips - Sources of Lead - Water

So essentially they are demanding money to pay for replacement of pipes, in order to save themselves money - and rather underhandedly attempting to proclaim that the city is poisoning them. Like I said, it would have been nice for the city to give these folks a heads up - but it is /not/ the water providers responsibility once it leaves the main.

It is equivalent to saying that it's the cities fault if the homeowner puts their septic leech field too close to their well and gets shit water.

Really, the water provider built their houses and put in lead pipes and used lead solder? Show me the link for that please.

Else wise, the vast majority of the country, hell the world, realized lead pipes and lead solder was bad at the same time and did something about it. Fun fact: Plumbing actually derives from the Latin word for lead because the fucking ROMAN's made the first pipes out of lead. These particular folks blew off fixing their shit for whatever reason. Not only did they blow it off for a while, but they've blown it off for god damn near 100 fucking years. We've known lead paint was bad since fucking 1904. Stopped making/using lead pipes in 1925. In the 30s and 40s we noted occupational lead poisoning was occurring. Lead gas went out of style in the mid 70s. It's not like this is a "new" thing so stop pretending.

They could have moved, could have got a loan to fix it, could have got a second job for a while to pay for it somewhere in the past fucking 92 years - OR they can just run their fucking water for 10 minutes before drinking or cooking with it. But nope, they don't wanna, they'd rather drink lead infused water than go through that minor effort. Bummer. Choices /they/ are making. No one is forcing them to drink lead leech water, they are /choosing/ to. So yeah, fuck em.

I hope something like this happens to you, out of your control, and you can't afford to fix the situation, and you lose everything. Then maybe you won't be a judgemental unfeeling asshole.
