The only time I'll fly first class is when I get a free upgrade,which happens pretty often because we fly a lot.
If we plan on flying for more than 3 hours or so that a different deal.
We were flying from Kansas City to Houston and got a free upgrade. Thank God because we sat on the tarmac for over three hours before we took off.

Meh, given that congress critters are allowed by their own rules to fly 1st class I don't see this as much of a much.

It's just unseemly but the congress-critters, for the most part, lack any kind of shame so there you go. One of the worst offenders is Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) that racks-up the biggest bills year in and year out.

In fact back in 2014 a bill was introduced in the house to require them to fly coach and it died in committee. Big fuckin' surprise there, so yeah, it's up to the congress critters themselves.

It should be noted that .mil members under the rank of Major General have to fly coach but if there are empty seats in business or 1st class many airlines will upgrade them as a "thanks for your service" type of thing.
