Alabama, North Dakota, Wyoming Most Conservative States

Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the only two states where more people identify as liberals than conservatives. Even in Vermont (election 2012: Obama +36) there are more conservatives than liberals.

I've never understood these polls where people self identify as Conservative, Moderate or Liberal. Who is defining what each encompasses?
