Gold Beach was five miles long, this is the German bunker complex facing our guys, quite formidable, i have visited some of them and the whole lanscape you can still see the smaller machine gun bunkers.

Legend has it that the Germans were fooled about D Day and they were somewhere else. Maybe that was the story they gave to the poor bastards who had to assault those bunkers.

Well there is a theory we wanted them to think we would attack over the English channel between Dover and the French coast which is the shortest rout only about twenty miles, at the time Rommel was on leave in Germany, Gold beach casualties were over a thousand with about 350 killed storming the Beach 20 naval ratings and about 60 RAF, the Americans had it the worst at Omaha, my Uncle was one who survived the landing on Gold but was killed 12 days later in the fighting East of Bayeux.
