GOP legislation would cut off Holder's salary

Political weapon. I do not agree with this.

Then, would you say "Contempt of Court" is a political weapon?

contempt of congress, not court. Contempt of court would probably be impeachable if the contempt went to official duties .... of course the gop will impeach over a hangnail, but that's another issue.

Still it puts congress in charge of whom the chief executive may appoint and retain in executive offices. So, it is a political weapon.

Really? Got any examples (outside of bubba clinton) ?

If these investigations really ARE "witch hunts", Dottie then common sense would tell you that the best method of diffusing them is to get all of the information out there so that the public can SEE that it is indeed a witch hunt.

That hasn't happened with this Administration. They are stonewalling all three investigations as stubbornly as possible. It simply doesn't make sense if the accusations are indeed "unfounded". That's simple common sense.

like Reagon was forthcoming w/ Iran/Contra? You're funny :p

The HUGE difference between Reagan and Obama is that the main stream media went after the truth on Iran-Contra...while they've studiously avoided doing so on Fast & Furious, Benghazi and the IRS scandals.

When Sharyl Attkisson of CBS quits her job in disgust over the lack of transparency by the Obama Administration and the unwillingness of her bosses at CBS to hold the White House's feet to the fire you KNOW it's become bad. What's "funny" is that you think there is such a thing as journalism in this country any more.

Have you paid ANY attention to the Tea Party House fringe suggesting we impeach Obama?

GOP legislation would cut off Holder's salary

A Republican lawmaker has introduced legislation that would cut off pay to Attorney General Eric Holder and other federal officials who have been held in contempt of Congress.
Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, introduced the "Contempt Act" on Tuesday, less than a week after alluding to the measure during a contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing where Holder faced criticism from GOP lawmakers.

"The American people should not be footing the bill for federal employees who stonewall Congress or rewarding government officials’ bad behavior," Farenthold said in a statement. "If the average American failed to do his or her job, he or she would hardly be rewarded."
Under the proposal, the contempt resolution would have to be adopted by either the House or Senate for the official to lose their pay. The GOP-led House voted in 2012 to hold Holder in contempt for failing to provide key information on Operation Fast and Furious.

Farenthold's bill would not apply to Lerner, who retired last fall.

"While Ms. Lerner has since retired from the IRS, my bill will at least prevent current and future federal employees, like [Holder], from continuing to collect their taxpayer-paid salaries while held in contempt of Congress," Farenthold said.

I think this is a very good idea to be on the books regardless of the politics of party. It acts as a sanction against any Department head or even the president from thumbing their nose to the American people. Just how long would Holder have been without a pay check now? Could have legs. And no getting retro pay when they finally act on the order they are avoiding.

i guess the concept that a) you don't have the senate; and b) the president would veto; and c) you don't have the votes to override a veto is beyond your comprehension.

carry on.

:cuckoo:

I doubt its constitutional. The judiciary act of like 1780 established the AG, as well as things like fed judges, marshals, etc. I suppose congress could decide not to fund the entire judiciary and DOJ, but to defund a specific position it already specifically created ......? But there are lunatics in the gop. The dems too, but the lunatics are more or less confined in that party.

Of course, neither course is legal.

Bottom line still remains the same...

Eric Holder is NOT going to investigate wrongdoing by this White House and there's very little anyone in Congress can do if the Attorney General simply refuses to do his job.

He will go down in history as one of the worst AG's ever...but he will remain a "hero" to the far left of the Democratic Party.

What does the Iran Contra have to do with the present? How is the Iran Contra relevant to what is going on with the investigations regarding Fast and Furious, Bengazi and the IRS?

Also Reagan has been dead for 10 years. Get with the present.

The Left always wants to justify their wrong doing by pointing fingers, rather than reforming themselves.

That was like what.... 28 years ago?

Doesn't really matter how far back they have to go...and in fact, the farther back they can go, the more their myths can appear to be reality. Like the "Reagan/Iran deal" that they claim was made to undermine Jimmy Carter. It was so thoroughly refuted back in the 80's that they had to wait 30 years to bring it up again.

Obama declared that his Administration would fundamentally change Washington...funny how what he's now becoming known for is scandals reminiscent of Watergate and Iran Contra. So much for the most transparent Administration in history...what we got instead was an Administration vying for the title of most things to hide of any Administration in history!

And if he was a Republican, you'd support every single thing that he's done.

Contemp of court is a crime. Contempt of congress is a perception based on your political affiliation more often than not.
Congress already has too much power imo. Giving them the power to play with peoples income beyond what they already have is asking for trouble.

Are we so short sighted that we can't see the turnabout?

You have that backwards, contempt of court is completely up to the judge, contempt of Congress is an actual crime.

Congress has the authority to hold a person in contempt if the person's conduct or action obstructs the proceedings of Congress or, more usually, an inquiry by a committee of Congress.

Contempt of Congress is defined in statute, 2 U.S.C.A. § 192, enacted in 1938, which states that any person who is summoned before Congress who "willfully makes default, or who, having appeared, refuses to answer any question pertinent to the question under inquiry" shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to a maximum $1,000 fine and 12 month imprisonment.

Before a Congressional witness may be convicted of contempt, it must be established that the matter under investigation is a subject which Congress has constitutional power to legislate.
