Gov. Jerry Brown Calls Congress Drought Bill ‘Unwelcome And Divisive’

I know nothing about the water crisis (other than that there is a bad drought), but my copy of the Constitution doesn't say anything in Article I giving Congress the power to decide who gets scarce water resources within the confines of an individual state.

This sure as fuck isn't "regulating interstate commerce."

On the other hand, California having regulations that protect fish at the expense of humans is...how can I put it?...priceless!

One is either for States Rights or against States Rights with no ifs, ands or buts about it.

OK, a tornado strikes in Kansas. Wipes out all the infrastructure in the state, does the federal government then get involved?

California is not an island. They get their water form some where. That somewhere needs water as does somewhere else. So yes the feds should get involved as they would with tornados in Kansas.

Republicans own the farms in the central valley. Repubs are feeling they won't make enough money without having unrestricted access to what water is available.

So the Repubs ultra rich voters went to the Repub Congresscritters they bought and wanted to make sure they had the water they wanted.

And Jerry said no.

Then we have to listen to the lying Repub assholes in Congress talking about how they value "states rights".

Wow. This is perhaps the most clueless post I've read all day.

It won't take long for him to outdo himself.

Desalinization is expensive and energy intensive. It's OK for drinking water, but for irrigating crops it simply isn't economical.

Build power plants and aquaducts. Problem solved, problem staying solved.

Do you really want to pay $100/lb. for tomatoes?

If desalinization is OK for drinking water, then build the plants to supply drinking water and allow the farmers to use the natural water. No $100/lb tomatoes.

Much of lower California is essentially a desert, and cannot support the water needs of the millions of people who want to make their home there. They should have already been building desalinization plants to supply the needs of people.

Residential water usage accounts for less than 5% of all water consumption in the country. Most water goes to irrigate crops. If desalinization was used to produce all residential water, it wouldn't make a noticeable dent in California's water problem.

When will Republicans realize that when dealing with democrats it is their way or the highway? There is simply no compromise. They also have to realize that Obama and Brown are experts on almost anything and their will should prevail. Not sure what committees do in Congress, maybe they could save a lot of time and just ask Brown or Obama what they should do. Yes, being a dictator would be easier.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Gov. Jerry Brown said Monday that a Republican effort in Congress to address California’s unprecedented drought is an “unwelcome and divisive intrusion” in the state’s efforts to address the crisis by pitting water users against one another.

Brown, a Democrat, sent a letter Monday to leadership of the House Committee on Natural Resources and California’s entire congressional delegation asking them to oppose HR3964, which is scheduled to be taken up this week.

Since you brought it up, the committees in the House are all chaired by Tea Bagging idiots who do what the Koch Bros. tell them.

The Science Committee is chaired by creationists.

Jerry Brown has turned the state of CA around, they have a surplus.

A Dem did that.

California gets part of their water from sources outside the State. Thus interstate it is. Further if the Dems in the State legislature are punishing republican farmers then that is a State punishing its citizens illegally.

As was noted most of the aqueducts are owned by the US Government Corps of Engineers again Federal oversight.

This is NOT a States right infringement.

Wanna know what is?

Claiming that all transactions whether interstate or intrastate are Federal and subject to Federal regulations. Like firearms made INSIDE a State and only sold IN that State.

"Fiscally conservative" is a liberal euphemism for "tax and spend."

And the larger percentage of those 18 counties which have lower unemployment rates happen to be heavily Democrat. The entire Bay Area and Los Angeles county is Democrat, not to mention a few coastal counties. The counties with higher unemployment rates are Republican.

I was dubious about him at first, now I'm impressed. I like the job he's doing.
