Far left Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) announced this week that he was leaving Congress after 40 years. Today he kicked the Tea Party on the way out the door.

I announced this past week that I will be retiring after having the honor of serving my Los Angeles constituents in Congress for 40 years.

Immediately, speculation began that I am leaving because I am frustrated with a broken institution. But the exact opposite is true: I am leaving Congress with my conviction intact that the legislative branch can be a powerful force for good.

Of course there are aspects of the current Congress that I abhor. This past week, every Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee, where I have served most of my career, voted to limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to regulate carbon pollution that is causing climate change. When my colleague Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) offered a simple amendment affirming that climate change is real, they voted against that, too.

That kind of mindless denial of science is an embarrassment.

Voting over and over to repeal the Affordable Care Act, shutting down the government and threatening default are other deplorable examples of the extremism of tea party Republicans…

We have term limits.

They are called "Elections".

Every two years, Henry Waxman had to be renominated by the member of his party and then by the people of his district.

If they weren't happy with the job he was doing, they were free to vote him out.

How can they vote him out when no one runs against him?

Most politicians have an opponent. The problem, particularly with Congress, is that they gerrymander districts so that many heavily slant towards one party and the voters are so partisan that they aren't willing to cross party lines to throw out many of these old crusty douche bags.

Not if she isn't a career politician. I would welcome her, she is a voice I don't agree with, however she is a voice and if the people in her district elect her, then so be it. If she speaks or acts in ways that others disagree with, then she, like everyone else, is fair game for criticism.
