But that doesn't work. Here is a Rule of Thumb when it comes to taxation.... listen carefully and I will teach you something you didn't know here.... Whenever you tax ANYTHING you get LESS of it! SO....when you tax income, you have less income to tax. You assume that everything is in a vacuum and never changes... so you THINK that raising tax rates will increase revenues... it doesn't. It decreases the revenues because it decreases the incentive to earn income. This is illustrated by what is known as the Laffer Curve.

What we have to do is keep tax rates reasonable, broaden the base, reduce the corporate tax rates, maybe the top marginals slightly, the cap gains and death tax... because these things generate more revenue and grow our economy. At the same time, we also need to reign in runaway government spending. We have huge massive programs that we literally increase the funding for every year because the increases are built-in to the legislation. Some of these programs are decades old and they simply have never worked. We have to get rid of departments and agencies that are redundant and unnecessary and return these functions to the states where they belong. We even need to cut some defense spending but that needs to be done carefully and targeted toward waste and obsolete weapon systems.

The Problem is... it's hard to make these cuts because they're not popular. Trump's capitulation on Ethanol subsidies in Iowa is a classic example... he needs Iowan votes so he's suddenly a fan of ethanol subsidies.... even though it's probably the worst waste of taxpayer money we are currently paying for.

I think you are mising the point. A lot of Democrats aren't socialists, they just don't see the need for naked plutocracy your side supports. Guy, the Laffer Curve has been proven to be BULLSHIT. IN fact, you need to keep up. No one claims we should cut taxes on the rich because that will produce revenue. Reagan and Bush completely DEBUNKED that horseshit.

We did have the HUGE expense of WWII, of course, when we actually fought a war the right way. (also the last war we clearly won). We had a draft and we made people PAY FOR IT. So you look at the graph..

And you see when the rich paid their fair share, Debt as a percentage of GDP shrank, even when we continued to do really awesome things like the Interstate Highway system and the Space Program.
