A relatively overlooked movie featuring Robert Mitchum and a surprising dramatic performance by George Hamilton. In the movie Mitchum is a respected southern patriarch who fathers an illegitimate son George Peppard and as a result he gives up the raising of his legitimate son to his wife. The Hamilton character grows up under his mother's influence while the Peppard character is more like his Mitchum father. The climax shows the Hamilton character to be like his father while the wife finally acknowledges the Peppard character as her son.

In the 50's and 60's there were a number movies about families and their problems, Peyton Place, East of Eden, A Summer Place, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf etc. This one is not the best or worst but it's pretty good. My only complain is it seemed a bit long at 2hr and 20 mins but there is lots of drama and good performance by all.
