The Chinese purchase more U.S. residential real estate than buyers from any other foreign country, but Trump’s trade war may change that

Foreign purchases of American homes plunge 36% as Chinese buyers flee the market

Things haven't changed much in 100 years.

not to mention they now own the majority of our debt, replacing Japan as #1.

Maybe we can give them the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park and call it even....You know we don't have $1.5 trillion in gold.

Ironic that some of the slaves we had building our old rail system were from China,
and now they're decades ahead of us.

Maybe we can get them to open their markets to US goods and services and change the balance of payments so they won't have so many dollars to invest here.

Ummm.. No they don't own a MAJORITY of our debt, they're the largest foreign holder of U.S. federal debt held by the public.

Does anyone else get the feeling the American Democrats are rooting for their Chinese counterparts to win the trade war?

I think their only fixation is on making Trump look bad.
Totally. Just last week they were praying for hurricane Delorean to destroy Florida. Today they are praying for recession.

Democrats want Americans to suffer. They believe that making one American poor to raise three Chinese out of poverty is worth it.

If we owe China $1.5 trillion or whatever how much is the interest on that every year ?
Do you know ?

Off the top of my head no, the rates on Treasury Instruments held by the Chinese aren't uniform, I suspect someone has come up with an average which you could probably find by searching for it.

Of course the amount and the composition of treasury instruments held by the Chinese is constantly changing (as the CCB buys and sells debt) so whatever you find will likely be out of date rather quickly.

No, China does not own most of the debt. China and Japan both own about 1.1 trillion dollars of the 16 trillion of public debt. Intragovernment debt which is about 6 trillion brings the total US debt to 22 trillion of which the Chinese own about 5%.

There are many reasons for the plunge in foreign real estate purchases, including less economic growth which slowed to 3.6% in 2018 and is on track to slow to 3.3% in 2019. In addition to tighter controls on outside investment by the Chinese government, a stronger U.S. dollar makes the cost of buying higher and a low inventory of homes for sale has wiped out most of bargains in real estate that were common in 2010 to 2015 real estate market.

Even at 1 % that would be $150 billion a year - just the interest .

Yep, it's not chump change and the Chinese only hold a around $1.2 Trillion out the roughly $7 Trillion held by foreigners.

Of course one must take into account that Americans benefit more than the foreigners that hold our debt by virtue of the fact that the U.S. Dollar is the worlds reserve currency (for now) and what we're borrowing today has more purchasing power than what we'll eventually pay back (including interest)... that is until our creditors figure out that we'll NEVER be able to pay it back. ;)

YES -

The U.S. debt to China is $1.11 trillion as of May 2019. That's 27% of the $4.1 trillion in Treasury bills, notes, and bonds held by foreign countries. The rest of the $22 trillion national debt is owned by either the American people or by the U.S. government itself.

China has the greatest amount of U.S. debt held by a foreign country. Japan comes second at $1.10 trillion. It's followed the United Kingdom at $332 billion, Brazil at $306 and Ireland at $271 billion.

LIKE I SAID ....

Give them California and call it even...

No one will miss Cali....

We're not going to "give" them a fucking thing.

We're already in the process of a slow default so they'll be lucky to get their principle (in terms of purchasing power) back, in case nobody told you guys Tricky Dick ended the system of international settlements in gold, so now we just settle with worthless pieces of cloth with faces printed on them.

Ireland at $271 billion.

LIKE I SAID ....

YEAH LIKE YOU SAID "not to mention they now own the majority of our debt,"

....because you're a left wing dingbat that doesn't know what the word MAJORITY means.
